Female K-pop group LE SSERAFIM has been making waves with their musical talent since their debut days. The group is known for making songs which are sonically and tonally diverse. With each comeback, they have something new to showcase to their listeners. That remains the same with their latest comeback as well. The group made a stunning comeback with their third mini-album EASY. For this EP, the members took turns and participated in writing the tracks. It captures the band’s exploration and expansion from their previous musical style. From the lead single ‘EASY’, rooted in the trap genre, to ‘Good Bones’, characterized by a hard rock sound, ‘Swan Song’, boasting a soft melody, ‘Smart’, featuring a groovy feel, and ‘We got so much’, filled with captivating vocals, the five-track album showcases LE SSERAFIM’s versatile and ever-evolving musicality. This 5-track EP was released on February 19, 2024 along with a music video for the title track ‘EASY’.

1. GOOD BONES

 

‘Good Bones’ is a powerful trilingual rock track. The song exudes confidence and unabashed love for one’s strong sense of perseverance. There is a touch of breathless sensuousness to the singing which feels forced and takes away from the listening experience. As the track progresses one feels the focus shift from the instruments to the vocals.

 

2. EASY

 

‘EASY’ is a shade apart from its preceding track. There is a new touch of genre mix with trap beats almost continuously buzzing through the track. The chorus is bound to hook you to its charm. The song sports a laid back charm but that is what makes it so impactful. The girls sing about making the most hardest things look easy – “I could get hurt, but keep on walking, kiss me/If it’s hard then I makе it easy/Up on the stage, sparks fly off my body/Pull up and I rip it up likе ballet/Damn, I really make it look easy.” The music video sports minimalist setting, letting the girls and their musicality shine through more. With this track, they declare their determination to pave their own path and “make it look easy” through unmeasurable hard work and effort in the face of hardships.

 

3. SWAN SONG

 

Touting themselves as ‘black swans’, the girls here sing about making it to their goals despite all odds. They croon, “It's not easy, but I keep on swimming/Even so, I gotta kill these waves now”. The mood remains the same, but the music changes to a cinematic rendition. Imagine a montage of the group working towards goals and this track playing to highlight the struggles and challenges they face. The early 2000s RnB music makes it easy on the ears to get grooving to the song.

 

4. SMART

 

‘Smart’ is a track which is sonically different from the group’s earlier releases. The song sports a tropical vibe to the song which transports the listeners to the golden sands of a pristine beach. The song is also a proclamation that the group has learned a lot and has become ‘smarter’ – “On my defeat, instead of the beauty of a pen/I chose a stronger name, ‘villain’.”

 

5. WE GOT SO MUCH

 

The EP concludes with the smooth dance pop song “We Got So Much”. Towards the end of the track, there is a segue to drums and electric guitar which highlights the strong sense of determination and grit as sung in the lyrics – “We'll have many, many days to move forward together/They won't always be good/But I know we'll get through.”

 

In continuation from FEARLESS, ANTIFRAGILE, and UNFORGIVEN, the new album also draws from LE SSERAFIM’s genuine thoughts and emotions. All members contributed to the songwriting process, further enhancing the authenticity of the album's theme surrounding anxiety and vulnerability beneath a confident exterior. LE SSERAFIM proves once again that they can ease into any genre effortlessly. With this EP, they get on a strong start with rock-heavy track ‘Good Bones’ and soon descend into softer tunes as the EP progresses. This EP showcases that the group does indeed make things look easy. Be it trying new genres, writing the songs - the group knows how to make an impact on their listeners. This mini album is a testament to the claim that the group has a lot more in store to showcase when it comes to writing and composing new music.
