Taapsee Pannu reveals Bollywood's bias: "They'll IMMEDIATELY invest Rs. 25 cr in a thriller with me but hesitate in making a love story in Rs. 15 cr"; says playing strong women has become a 'gaali': "Feels like maine bahut bada paap kiya hai!"
Taapsee Pannu, Kanika Dhillon and Guneet Monga Kapoor attended a session organized by WIF India and Kathha Pictures on women driving Indian cinema and the rise of female-led collaborations. During the discussion, Kanika and Guneet revealed that there were times when they were not taken seriously by men in the industry and spoke about how they dealt with such situations.
On the other hand, Taapsee Pannu revealed, “I have a reverse problem. People take me way too seriously! Those who know me personally are aware that I am not a serious, intense person. I make fun of myself as much as I make fun of everybody around. Hence, when I walk into a room and express a desire to do comedy or love story, the common reply is ‘Taapsee ke saath love story possible nahin hai. Taapsee ke saath aap comedy banaoge?’!”
She added, “They don’t even give peanuts for the budgets of such films. I even tell them that I’m willing to come on the backend. I am aware that the majority of the footfalls in the theatre are also men who might also assume that I cannot pull off a comedy or a love story. Though after Manmarziyaan (2018), I don’t know what more to do or show in a love story.”
Taapsee observed, “I guess I don’t have a delicate, fragile image. So, the perception is ‘We won’t invest Rs. 15 crores to make a love story with Taapsee. But we’ll immediately put Rs. 25 crores for a thriller or mystery drama or actioner with Taapsee’! Such films get immediately mounted and then I wonder, how am I supposed to behave? I want to tell everyone that Taapsee jaise insaan ke life mein bhi love story ho sakti hai.”
She continued, “It’s difficult for me to tell that I am not the character I play in back-to-back films, which is that of a strong woman. It almost feels like a gaali given to me that ‘Taapsee, aap hamesha strong woman ka role karte ho’. It feels like maine bahut bada paap kiya hai!”
