This was a press conference with a difference! Devaki, whose life has been captured on celluloid in a film called DEVAKI, was present at the press meet hosted by the producers on Tuesday, December 20. Hailing from Madhya Pradesh, Devaki was auctioned for Rs. 5,000 to an old man by the Panchayat and it was this incident that triggered off a film on her life.
Starring Suman Ranganathan in the role of Devaki, the film co-stars Perizaad Zorabian [an urban activist, who is also exploited], whose story runs as the parallel track in the film. “I didn’t want anyone else but Suman to enact the lead role,” reveals director Bappaditya Bandopadhyay, “The film makes an introspective journey in the lives of two women.”
Perizaad is equally gung-ho about the film. “It’s a thought-provoking film with a loud message at the end of it,” she states. DEVAKI has won tremendous international acclaim and will have its premiere release in India on January 6, 2006.
