Pathaan (2023) has emerged as the biggest grosser of Hindi cinema, collecting Rs. 543.05 crores in the domestic market. Even internationally, it made waves. In the country of Nepal, it has made history as it has emerged as the highest international film of the neighbouring country. This means that it has collected not just more than other Hindi films but also Hollywood biggies.
As per the international movie collection report released by the Film Development Board of the Government of Nepal, Pathaan is the number one non-Nepalese film in the country, collecting NPR 13.28 crores. Avatar: The Way Of Water (2022) is on the second position while Brahmastra (2022) is on the third position. Their collections stand at NPR 8.30 crores and NPR 4.47 crores respectively. In other words, Pathaan’s earnings are more than the combined collections of Avatar: The Way Of Water and Brahmastra. The report also states that while Pathaan sold 4,37,585 tickets, the total number of tickets sold for Avatar: The Way Of Water and Brahmastra are 2,68,931 and 1,50,235 respectively.
The films from the 4th to the 15th position in this list are:
4. Drishyam 2 - NPR 3.47 crores
5. Uunchai - NPR 2.94 crores
6. Kantara - NPR 2.47 crores
7. Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan - NPR 2.28 crores
8. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever - NPR 21.9 crores
9. Adipurush - NPR 1.99 crores
10. Laal Singh Chaddha - NPR 1.72 crores
11. John Wick: Chapter 4 - NPR 1.65 crores
12. Guardians Of Galaxy Vol. 3 - NPR 1.60 crores
13. Shamshera - NPR 1.59 crores
14. Fast X - NPR 1.55 crores
15. Vikram Vedha - NPR 1.50 crores
Note: All collections are gross and the list comprises films released after July 1, 2022.
Uunchai (2022), surprisingly, makes it to the fifth position over many other big grossers. But this is probably because the Amitabh Bachchan-starrer was shot extensively in Nepal. Adipurush (2023), which caused an uproar in the Himalayan country, also did well as it emerged on the ninth position.
The list was shared by South cinema analyst Manobala Vijayabalan on Twitter. He told Bollywood Hungama, “Pathaan’s word of mouth was fantastic in India. Hence the audience in Nepal was keen on watching it on the big screen. Our films run very well compared to Hollywood movies, except in a few cases. Also, the Shah Rukh Khan factor played a major role. Another thing to note is KGF - Chapter 2 (2022) and RRR (2022) are not present in the list because they are following a different financial year instead of the calendar year.”
Speaking of the local Nepalese films, the biggest grosser is the comic caper Chhakka Panja 4 (2023). It is part of a blockbuster franchise, and it collected NPR 17.52 crores. The second position is taken by Jaari (2023). It collected a huge NPR 17.17 crores. Prem Geet 3 (2022), which also had a wide release in India, came third, collecting NPR 7.70 crores. Hence, if we consider both domestic and international films, then Pathaan emerges on the third spot, which is quite a feat.
