The Chandraprakash Dwivedi directorial Samrat Prithviraj was released yesterday after much hype and promotion. Starring Akshay Kumar, Manushi Chhillar, Sanjay Dutt and Sonu Sood, the film has been one of the most talked about releases. Being a historical drama, questions were raised on its box office potential, but given the buzz surrounding it, Samrat Prithviraj was expected to start on a high note.
However, contrary to expectations and predictions, Samrat Prithviraj opened on less than expected note managing to draw in just Rs. 10.70 cr. Despite a wide release across 3750 screens, [Hindi: 3550 + Tamil + Telugu: 200] across India the film has faced an uphill task. When compared to Akshay Kumar’s previous releases, Samrat Prithviraj ranks as the actor’s 24th highest all time opening day grosser, behind releases like Entertainment which collected Rs. 11.16 cr, Once Upon A Time In Mumbai Dobaara which collected Rs. 11.25 cr, Boss which collected Rs. 12.75 cr and even Tees Maar Khan which had collected Rs. 13 cr.
Going forward, Samrat Prithviraj which has received appreciative reviews from the critics is expected to see an increase in collections. In fact, advance reports suggest that the film has seen an increase in footfalls on its second day running. As per trade predictions, the business of Samrat Prithviraj that has gained appreciation in mass dominated sectors will see a good increase over the weekend.
