The much-awaited period drama, Gangubai Kathiawadi has taken a very good start at the box office. As per our early tracking, the Sanjay Leela Bhansali film has collected in the vicinity of Rs. 8.25 to 9 crores. The film has over performed as the trade was generally expecting around Rs. 7 crore opening day.
Mumbai and Pune were the highest contributors for Gangubai Kathiawadi, with night shows going on a rampage mode with full house all across. The word of mouth is on the positive side, with large chunk of appreciation coming from the female audience. The collections are expected to rise on Saturday and Sunday, with opening weekend biz in vicinity of Rs. 33 crore.
The movie has been sold to PEN Studios for an exorbitant rate, and hence, it is extremely essential for it to sustain over the next 10 days and put up a big total. Gangubai Kathiawadi has emerged as the biggest opener of all time for a solo Alia Bhatt film by surpassing Raazi, which had opened at Rs. 7.53 crore approx. It is also the third biggest opener of this pandemic after Sooryavanshi and 83, that too on a non-festive day. The collections of Gangubai Kathiawadi surpassed 83 at multiple locations of Mumbai, despite a non-holiday period and this is a big achievement.
The opening of the film was boasted by Sanjay Leela Bhansali's brand value, however, even a director like him needs a star and opening day of the film consolidates Alia Bhatt's position as biggest crowd puller among the female stars today. While the collections will continue to be driven by Mumbai, Pune and Gujarat, other circuits are expected to see a spike in collections over the weekend, and one can already foresee big gains in its collections in next 2 days.
