The mere announcement of the sequel to Gadar: Ek Prem Katha had generated excitement among Bollywood film lovers, especially Sunny Deol fans. But the rise in anticipation for Gadar 2, as it neared release, was unprecedented to say the least. This was visible with the excellent advance booking the Anil Sharma directorial showed. But even then, the opening for Gadar 2 exceeded expectations as the film scored Rs. 40.10 crores on its first day.
With the acceptance the film has received, it is expected to grow from here and continue its winning journey at least till the Independence Day (August 15).
But the high opening of Gadar 2 has brought a very interesting data to light. The film’s opening day number itself is higher than the lifetime collections of all Sunny Deol movies ever except Gadar: Ek Prem Katha (2001) and Yamla Pagla Deewana (2011). The first Gadar finished its box office journey at Rs. 76.88 crores. Considering that it was 22 years ago, this is a huge number. YPD, on the other hand, finished at Rs. 55.28 crores, which makes it a semi-hit.
Interestingly, after Gadar: Ek Prem Katha, Sunny Deol’s Indian, which came in the same year, turned out to be his next success but it finished at Rs. 24.22 crores. But following this, he only had one success in the form of Yamla Pagla Deewana. Of course, Gadar 2 in all probability will become his next hit film.
