The much-awaited film, Pathaan, was finally released this year, on January 25. Starring Shah Rukh Khan, Deepika Padukone, and John Abraham, this action entertainer carried humongous expectations due to the casting, scale, grandeur, and chartbuster songs. A huge opening was expected by all. Yet, no one expected the Siddharth Anand directorial to record earth-shattering collections of Rs. 57 crores on Day 1. The collections went higher the next day and then maintained steadily. In its lifetime, it ended up having record-breaking collections of Rs. 545 crores in India while overseas, it grossed Rs. 396.02 crores.
In this box office analysis, we take a look at the economics of Pathaan to see how profitable the venture was for its makers, Yash Raj Films (YRF). The total budget of Pathaan, including the cost of production and P&A, was Rs. 270 crores. Given that it earned Rs. 545 crores in India and Rs. 396.02 crores overseas, its distributor share from both these fronts amount to Rs. 245 crores and Rs. 178 crores respectively. It also earned Rs. 150 crores from the sale of satellite and digital rights and Rs. 30 crores from the exploitation of music and through subsidies. As a result, Yash Raj Films earned a revenue of Rs. 603 crores on an investment of Rs. 270 crores resulting in a profit of approx. Rs. 333 crores.
Meanwhile, Shah Rukh Khan didn’t charge an upfront fee and opted for a 60% profit sharing. This means that he walked away with approx. Rs. 200 crores as his remuneration for acting in Pathaan.
