2 BIGGEST Superstars and a National Holiday – Yet combined Day 1 at Rs. 20 crores and Day 2 at 13.66 cr; trade experts speak about the dismal performances of Laal Singh Chaddha & Raksha Bandhan

Girish Johar, producer, and film business analyst, sighed, “I am disappointed over the start at the box office. They are two big stars and both films are biggies. Both the actors have gone all out in promoting the films all across. The music also did decently well. So it ticked all the right boxes. Yet, if the audiences do not turn up, I can see some writing on the wall which we, as a fraternity, need to ponder upon.”

Trade veteran Taran Adarsh said that he’s particularly shocked over the fact that Laal Singh Chaddha collected just Rs. 11.70 crores on the first day and followed it up with only Rs. 7.2 crores on Day 2. He said, “It was an Aamir Khan film after four years. On top of that, there was also the Raksha Bandhan holiday. It alone should have opened at least Rs. 25 crores. Also, it’s a big film with a heavy tag. Excuses won’t work now. The market is 100% open.”

Raksha Bandhan meanwhile opened at just Rs. 8.20 crores on Day 1 and ended Day 2 with Rs. 6.4 crores. As a result, the combined one-day total is just Rs. 20 crores and combined Day 2 at Rs. 13.66 cr, which is quite low than the expectations. Trade analyst Atul Mohan exclaimed, “Ek zamana tha jab ek bada actor Rs. 40-50 crores ki opening deta tha.”

Taran Adarsh remarked, “Both films collected around Rs. 20 crores on a holiday. If Laal Singh Chaddha and Raksha Bandhan had come on a non-holiday, then imagine what would have been the result.”

Atul Mohan however observed, “Raksha Bandhan is not a big holiday. The morning and afternoon shows are always thanda as people are busy with festivities and in family gatherings. It’s in the evening that they go for a film, provided the reports are positive.”

He continued, “Sadly, Laal Singh Chaddha and Raksha Bandhan didn’t enjoy the benefit as the excitement of watching movies and the magic of cinema is diminishing.”
