A stylish, star-powered action flick with fast exciting songs in the background (a typical and yet must have feature of an action flick) is what the Soham Shah directed film "Luck" is.
There are as many pluses as minuses in the film, but overall Luck is worth a watch.
The Negative:
At more than several times during the film, characters are forced to speak these flashy, unnatural dialogues to each other which I guess are "supposed" to be catch phrases. The problem with these catch phrases is that they were too cheesy and the over-quantity of them degraded their importance. They weren't witty and special as were the dialogues of "Kala Pathar" between Amitabh Bachchan and Shatrughan Sinha.
Secondly, Imraan Khan. He was very good in the film and played his role well but from his very first film, I felt there was a rawness in his dialogue delivery which needs improvement. Other than that, he was fantastic playing a bollywood-masala hero type character.
Thirdly, Sanjay Dutt's repeated look and character's disposition. He's played this type of role so many times and this role can be directly traced back to "Musafir." In fact, from the french cut beard, to the spiky hair, to the clothes, to the walk, to the tricks with his weapons, to the item song, to the "making the hero do various tasks for him," to the name: Dutt's character in "Musafir" and "Luck" are the same. The name is actually not the same with "Musafir" but instead it is the same with "Plan."
Fourthly, the climax: I mean everything was okay and entertaining with it, but highly unreal in that some people should have died in many instances but then they didn't and that's not "luck," that's just stupidity.
Fifthly, the predictability: Whose gonna live, whose gonna die --> Its sooooooooooooooooooooooo obvious.
The Positive:
The entire star cast: Apart from what I said before, everyone did a fine job in executing their proper roles with special mention to Ravi Kishan, Chitrashi, and Mithun Chakarborty. They brought a very natural and outstanding acting to their roles.
The action/stunts: Mind-blowing. Each one is better than the next and even though predictable, each stunt keeps you very much engrossed into the picture. The gun sequence, the parachuting, the train sequence, the other train sequence, and the water/shark sequence --> all were splendid.
The cinematography: Overall, it was pretty good. I mean once or twice it was hard to figure out what was going on, but otherwise the cameraman shot all those action scenes in those beautiful locales with excellence.
The locales: the director chose some brilliant looking places for his stunts and they only add to the sequence.
The music: Salim-Sulaiman did it again. Its not anything out of this world or very special. But I can't deny that the soundtrack is very catchy and has been playing in my car for a couple of weeks now.
The overall concept: The overall idea of human betting adds novelty points to the film for being "different."
Some final thoughts:
The final train sequence (climax) is a copy of Dhoom 2's train sequence when Hrithik Roshan steals the tiara.
The overall film looks a little like Fear Factor/Iss Jungle Se Mujhe Bacchao/Survivor. A group of people living in one area, doing dangerous stunts, and then bonding/fighting with each other during their free time.
