Baabul for me was an experience I will undoubtedly never forget. From the start of the movie, it's very emotional (for me anyways). There is something so emotional about the way Amitabh Bachchan sings the the title song "Kehta Hai Baabul". The look of the movie had a grandeur feel to it - which was good and kept it a little different from Baghban. The story is that of a delicate one. As I am from the UK I fully understand and support the way of thinking of Mr Bachchan's character but somehow I don't feel this is going to be felt in the same way in India. India proclaims it had abolished the tradition of SATI but still it goes on so widow remarrying is going to be a little hard for the public to come to terms with in some parts of India. As for the whole debate that the movie mirrors that of "Prem Rog" then it doesn't! The whole reason this film is being made now is because widow remarrying is still considered taboo in some parts of India and I congratulate everyone that worked on this movie for making it as it is a serious issue to be brought into the light. The best performance by far was that of Amitabh Bachchan and Rani Mukerjee. Amitabh Bachchan by far is the best actor in India and carries his role with grandeur substance. Rani is moulding her talent in ways that make her stand out far away from her contemporaries!!! Scenes such as Rani dancing in the rain with the knitted jumper, or when she force feeds herself on Karva Chauth to make sure she gets Salman Khan in lives to come make anyone with a heart of stone cry!! The little baby is soooo cute!!!!! The film is not as better as Baghban but it is still in its own league and I for one cannot wait for the release of it on DVD!!!!!

This movie had all the makings to be great with its all star cast and a very important subject concerning how India treats its widows. But this film failed on one simple fact - a very poor script. The diaglogues were very cliche and corny to say the least. I also felt the direction was poor (compared to Baghban) and the editing could have been a lot better. Amitabh was mediocre and not fully utilised. John Abraham looked worn out. Salman's acting never changes...there is nothing new about his moves. Highlight of the movie - Sarika...nice to see shades of her acting again, and the song "Bebasi"

Baabul had everything going for it..legends like BIG B, Hema malini..numero uno actress Rani M, Superstar Sallu and hot hunk John Abraham..great Banner..good music..an beautiful concept..but unfortunately, there is no soul, nor any compassion felt for any of the characters..you come out of the theatre thinking "OK so thats 30 bucks down the drain..what next ?" The experience is like watching one of the saas-bahu Ekta Kapoor serials..only this time its on the BIG screen !! Big B has done a marvellous job as the father-in-law who cannot stand to see his D-in-law suffer her husband's loss. Although a little far fetched, he brings a certain believability to the role when he plays matchmaker between Rani and John..his acting, be it his buddy relationship with his son, his respect towards his Elder brother, his love for his D-in-law..Big B has managed to get every nuance correctly, managing us to emphatise with him, ever so slightly. However, the way he convinces John to woo Rani, or Rani to marry John seems too easy..but clearly the movie belongs to BIG B ! RANI has performed well too..but somehow we find it difficult to connect with her pain and sufferings..her act in the first half with Salman was good..but post interval, there is too much melodrama, so much so that she is relegated to crying her guts out..which becomes a little irritating at times..the best scene where I liked her was the one where she dances in the rain holdin Sallus sweater and then bursts into tears..the recognition that dawns upon her that her husband is not coming back. Also noteworthy is the scene where she confronts her father in law about his plans to hook her up with John..altogether a good show, but too many tears spoils the performance considerably. SALMAN is in his comfort zone ..being the smart brat..some of his dialogues are so cheesy, that you would think he is trying to hold his laughter while speaking them..his scenes with Rani, the tea-coffee bit, and the milk drinking bit are quite good and entertaining..in fact, SALLU could be termed the comedian in the movie !! But his scenes with John could have been better written and performed.. Hema Malini looks as gorgeous as ever..i was completely mesmerised by her elegance and beauty..though she does not have much to do footage wise, she does throw in a good act in the end when she refuses to accept Rani's marriage to John.. It seems like JOHN Abraham has forgotton how to act !! I havnt seen such a tired and pale performance from him..he seems to be completely disinterested in the proceedings and only adds to the boredom mouthing lengthy dialogues with a wooden expression all over his face... Technically, the film could do with some editing..couple of songs could be trimmed down ...the movie gets too melodramatic and dialogue heavy post interval, that I found myself dozing off a bit !! the costumes in this movie are out of this world..beats even Karan Johar flicks !! makes us look like paupers ! The little kid in the movie is cute ..the scene where he hides in the cuboard amongst his father's clothes is well handled..Sarika in a tiny role as the repressed widow excels.. Music is fine ...although theres too much of it in the second half..out of the lot, Come on comeon (which seemed like a visual rip off of Shava shava) & the haunting Bhavari piya are good.. the movie suffers from a lack of a tight screenplay and editing.. Overall, a movie with a good concept and message..but minus the soul..

BAABUL was a great experience. The direction was excellent, the cinematography great, and the performances were the icing on the cake. Rani excelled first as the painter, then as the wife, next as the widow, and again as a bride. If there was one aspect of BAABUL which disappointed me was the writing. Of course, there were many scenes that were excellent in terms of writing and also execution. (i.e., the scene where Rani is fasting for karva chauth, the scence were she goes under the shower to wipe off her sindoor, and the scene where she dances in the rain with Salman's sweater.) But, nonetheless, the story was predictable. The climax could have been prolonged to leave more of an impact, and it seemed very rushed. The tagline of the movie is "HE BROKE ALL RELATIONS TO MAKE ONE," but the relations are broken for only about ten minutes, and then everyone is happy again. Rani was excellent, as was Amitabh and Hema. Salman was great, and John also demonstrated his skills beautifully. The music is okay. The songs melted into the movie, with not one of them unwanted. Overall, BAABUL is almost perfect, but not quite there with what I expected. Watch it for the performances and direction!

In one word-this movie is purely OUTSTANDING... The story may be old and not a gripping one for teenagers...but once you go see it, only then will you understand how good this film is. Well directed, fair music and outstanding poerformances especially by Amitabh Bachchan and Rani Mukherjee. The show belongs to Bachchan and Rani. In fact Bi B carries the film on his shoulders with such sensitivity and ease. He has yet again proved himself the king of Bollywood. Well Done Big B!!! He deserves some awards or the other for this performance and so does Rani...

The movie is great! Who cares if the movie has an old story or not, but the film works because of its message, emotional content and performance! People are saying Baabul is old-fashioned, they need to realize how stupid Dhoom 2 is, and a film like Dhoom 2 is going to beat Lage Raho Munnabhai? How more stupid can you get from people! Big B and SAlman rocks in this film! Hopefully, he film picks up and does well at the BO!
