Balraj Kapoor (Amitabh Bachchan), a rich businessman and his wife Shobhna (Hema Malini) are over the moon as their only son Avi (Salman Khan) is returning from the United States after seven years. Back home, Avi joins his father's business and falls in love with Mili (Rani Mukherjee) and they get married. Mili gives birth to an adorable and intelligent son Ansh and they live a perfectly happy life till Avi dies in an accident while on his way to Ansh's birthday. Mili is devastated and starts living the life of a widow. Balraj, unable to see Mili's suffering, decides to fill her life with love and joy by getting her married to her childhood friend Rajat (John Abraham). Balraj is opposed against getting Mili remarried by his elder brother Balwant (Om Puri) and also mildly by Shobhna. But Balraj doesn't budge and convinces his family to let Mili married to Rajat.
