Vijay Sethupathi speaks about initial clash with Vignesh Shivan on Naanum Rowdy Thaan set: “It took time for us to understand each other”

Actor Vijay Sethupathi recently revealed a behind-the-scenes disagreement he had with director Vignesh Shivan during the filming of their critically acclaimed film Naanum Rowdy Thaan.

In a recent interview as per India Today, Vijay discussed the challenges he faced early on in the production. He explained that disagreements with directors are a common occurrence throughout his long career. However, his initial collaboration with Shivan on Naanum Rowdy Thaan proved to be particularly challenging due to differing creative approaches.

 

"You are trying to teach me acting"

 

The Super Deluxe actor recounted a heated exchange with Shivan after the first day of filming. "I called Vicky [Vignesh Shivan] and fought with him," he stated. He expressed frustration, feeling Shivan was trying to micromanage his performance. "'You are trying to teach me acting. You haven't understood me,'" he told Shivan.

 

Fortunately, tensions eased with time. The Jawan actor credited actress Nayanthara, who also starred in the film, with helping mediate the situation. He revealed that after a few days, Nayanthara inquired about the issue, and he explained Shivan's desired portrayal of the character, Paandi, which Sethupathi initially struggled to grasp.

The 46-year-old actor acknowledged the complexity of the character, highlighting advice he received from actor Vishnu Vishal. "'Playing Paandi wouldn't be easy,'" he recalled Vishal saying. The character required a nuanced performance that balanced humor and pathos. "I was actually trying to emulate Vicky only, but it took time for us to understand each other," Sethupathi admitted.

While the initial clash presented a hurdle, Vijay ultimately developed respect for Shivan's unique filmmaking style. "We wouldn't even touch a subject like Kaathu Vaakula Rendu Kaadhal," he said, referencing their later collaboration. "'Nobody understands him. If you trust him and go along, he will create a lot of magic inside.'"

 

Speaking of the professional front, Vijay is currently seen in his latest release, Maharaja.
