She understands Ranveer’s need to take revenge on the gangster but she feels he is very impractical in expecting someone else especially two seemingly good for nothing nobodies to take his war as their own.
On his part one of those is drawn to her stoic dignity and silent strength. Her focus on things makes him see purpose. He is awed with her larger than life perspective towards life and her ability to see positive ness in the most negative of things.
Ghungroo lives adjacent to Inspector Ranveer’s house. She lives with her mother, who’s an aggressive, hard-nosed fisherwoman, locally known as Gangu mummy. Her Father himself was a Rickshaw driver once but lost his leg in an accident. Ghungroo shares an easygoing relationship with the residents around and her best friend is Ranbeer’s Sister in law; Devi.
Ghungroo spends most of the money she earns into doing up the interior of her Rickshaw. With all the accessories it has accumulated so far, it resembles a kitschy room more than it does a Rickshaw. Rickshaw hangings, perfume dispenser, leopard print upholstery, a multi speaker music system, and disco lights that flash in rhythm with the music. A large image of Durga is stickered to the back window of the Rickshaw.
She’d like you to believe she’s a man. But deep inside, she is all woman.
Ghungroo drives a ‘Rickshaw’ that she likes to call ‘Laila’. She treats it like she would another human being. Laila is her best friend and confidante. She often solves a dilemma by voicing it to Laila. It helps of course, that Laila cannot talk back.
Ghungroo is Mumbai city’s only woman Rickshaw driver. She knows all the shortcuts in Mumbai city. She talks switching between Marathi, Hindi and English
Sushmita Sen as Devi
There is no music in Devi’s life. She loved to sing and did her nurse training. In due course she met inspector Ranveer’s brother. It was love at first sight, a heady romance and the couple decided to settle down.
But her happiness proved to be short lived as just a few months later the inspector’s entire family was massacred by a ruthless gangster. Devi was out at that time and so she survived.
After the initial shock, Devi’s grief was slowly replaced by a bitter understanding of life’s cruelties. In an attempt to occupy herself she runs a small clinic.
