‘Aksar’ & originality

While on Ananth Narayan Mahadevan and AKSAR, the director has an interesting story to relate. Under normal circumstances, most producers/directors don’t reveal the entire story to the technical team of their film, but give a brief outline to keep them well-informed about the genre and content. In the case of lyricists too, most film-makers reveal only the situation in the story where the song is to be integrated.
But when Ananth narrated the entire storyline of AKSAR to music composer Himesh Reshammiya and lyricist Sameer much before the songs were recorded, the lyricist promptly asked him, “Aapne yeh kahani kaunsi Hollywood film se maari hain?” Ananth was flummoxed, for he didn’t know whether to take it as a compliment [Ananth claims it’s an original story] or feel embarrassed.
When Ananth replied that the story was indeed original, Sameer couldn’t believe his ears. “You actually cooked up an original script?” he asked. Says Ananth, “I don’t know if it has become a habit to copy Hollywood films, but even if someone attempts anything original which is in sharp contrast to the masala films churned out by most makers, the general perception is, yeh zaroor kisi angrezi film ki nakal hogi.” True!
