Censors applaud ‘Zinda’

One rarely hears of the censors applauding a film at the end of its screening. That’s precisely what the Examining Committee of the Central Board of Film Certification did when they watched Sanjay Gupta’s ZINDA a few days ago.
The committee, which comprises of people from all walks of life, was so upbeat after the screening that not only did they congratulate Gupta for attempting something daringly different, but also asked for Sanjay Dutt’s cellphone number since they felt that they ought to congratulate the Deadly Dutt for his remarkable performance in the film. Naturally, Dutt was surprised, humbled and thrilled!
While Gupta is maintaining a veil of secrecy vis-à-vis the content of the film, what our jasoos have carried to us is…
- The final length of the film is 1.54 hours.
- The censors have cleared the film with an ‘A’ certificate, with no cuts whatsoever. In fact, the censors had offered ‘U/A’ with cuts or ‘A’ with no cuts. Gupta settled for the latter.
- There are no songs in the film.
- The film is not for the faint-hearted. Expletives like the ‘F’ word are randomly used in the film because the script demands it.
- There are a number of graphic sequences of violence and gore -- the first time on Indian screen.
- Both Sanju and John have delivered the best performances of their career.
With so much going in its favor, ZINDA should prove to be a landmark film for Gupta, Dutt and John.
