"My pictures look the nicest with Dabboo because he loves me the most," says Shah Rukh Khan. The Bollywood New Year begins with the most eagerly anticipated calendar launch of Dabboo Ratnani. Biggest of stars readily agree to showcase their most endearingly memorable 'image'. Having been in the business for 17 years, what is it that makes celebrity photographer Dabboo Ratnani stand-out? "I still feel it's my first year at work. I am very enthusiastic about my work even now. For me, it's still the first day on the job. I get paid to do what I love to do," says Dabboo. When one interacts with Ratnani, the most notable aspect of his personality is the 'Honesty' with which he says whatever he says and the transparent clarity in whatever he does. Bollywood Hungama spoke to him on six pictures from his 2011 calendar. Let's find out what he had to say:
Salman Khan
People have loved Salman's picture. It's just being Salman. I wanted that James Dean, smoking, walking-on-the-street kind of a thing. He was shooting at Borivali National Park so I said I'll come there and do the shot. I loved the way the light was pouring in through the trees. I wanted to capture that he is coming out from the shadow into the light.
The idea was that Shah Rukh is almost getting ready for his premiere. The cycle is that of his gardener. It was a complete contrast situation. In a tuxedo, bow-tie and taking your gardener's cycle to the premiere of a movie. It was shot at his home, just outside where some construction is going on. He connected in some way, calling it cycle of life. It was in my thought, black trouser, bow tie, white shirt but he said, let's add the kamarband, dark glasses and the watch. He was really involved with the shot.
It was a very light vibe. We thought we'll do lounging by the pool side, easy body language, not-trying-hard kind of feel. We arranged the deck chairs in such a way that it gave a nice contour to the body. The vibe was to be happy, to be bright, not overtly sexy. We wanted it to be very relaxed, be like Priyanka and have that fun element. She loves wearing shorts; in fact she's wearing her own shorts in the picture. I like to have a hint of the personality of the star and that should come through in the picture.
Saif has done a lot of guitar shots. So, he was a point of inspiration for this shot. I thought why not shoot Bebo with a guitar. Even Saif loved the idea and pushed her to go for this shot. She said I like the thought of lying down in a bed with a guitar almost Rockstarrish but still an unusual angle since it was a top angle. I was eight feet above her. I gave her the brief and then she took it to the next level.
When I had spoken to Katrina, we had planned to do more like a gown kind of a look, more lost princess kind of a look. But when I saw this dress, I fell in love with it and I said, Katrina we have to do this. I think it will work wonders. We did the shot and it turned out really beautiful. I showed her the picture on the laptop and she loved it. The idea is that the dress is more of a statement dress and the make-up and hair is very soft. We made it a complete contrast. We kept the make-up soft, with wind blowing but the dress stands out from the crowd.
