The taboo surrounding menstruation is a lot in India. For a long time, it was a topic that was brushed under the carpet. But over the last few years, people have been talking about it without any embarrassment. After all, it’s a part of life for all women and they have realized that it deserves to be spoken about. Twinkle Khanna dedicated a part of her book ‘The Legend Of Lakshmi Prasad’ on the life of Arunachalam Muruganantham, who made low-cost sanitary napkins and thereby started a revolution. This story led to the making of the film PadMan, which also has Twinkle Khanna as one of the producers.

At the launch of the song ‘Aaj Se Teri’, the film’s actress Radhika Apte was asked by a journalist to talk how she reacted when she got her first periods. Radhika gave a very interesting reply that amazed everyone. She said, “I come from a family of doctors. So at home, I was informed beforehand that your periods will begin. Hence, I had an idea about it when my periods began. I had to go home as soon as that happened and my mother threw a party! I got my first watch on the day my periods started. All my family members and friends were there and we had a nice celebration.”

Radhika Apte continued, “I did cry because it’s scary to see so much blood coming out of your body. But on the other hand, everybody was giving me gifts. So I was also quite happy!”

Lastly, she added, “Despite this experience, when I used to go to shop for sanitary napkins, I used to feel a little embarrassed. But one day I decided to get over my own inhibition. I went to the shop and loudly asked, ‘Woh Whisper ka ek packet dena’. And from the day, it sort of completely changed things for me!” Radhika Apte’s answer made lead actor Akshay Kumar clap.

Apart from Radhika and Akshay, PadMan also stars Sonam Kapoor. It is directed by R Balki and it releases on January 26, 2018.
