Earlier this month we saw the release of the Akshay Kumar – Bhumi Pednekar starrer Raksha Bandhan. The film which hit screens alongside Laal Singh Chaddha on the festive occasion of Rakshabandhan was expected to fare well at the box office despite the competition. However, contrary to expectations Raksha Bandhan has been facing a tough time posting box office collections. Following a lacklustre start, the business of Raksha Bandhan witnessed a decline in collections over its opening weekend, with the subsequent weekdays remaining low as well. Now on its second weekend running, the business of Raksha Bandhan has been stunningly low. In fact, collecting Rs. 42.20 cr. over its theatrical run the film has emerged as one of Akshay Kumar’s lowest-grossing films in the recent past.
Looking back at Akshay Kumar’s career box office graph what stands out the most is the fact that the actor, who is regarded as one of the most bankable stars went through a similar phase back in 2008-2009. Starting with Jumbo which hit screens in December 2008, and continuing with Chandini Chowk To China in January 2009 and 8x10 Tasveer in April 2009, Akshay had three back-to-back releases which missed the mark at the box office. Since then, though, Akshay has had his share of hits with the occasional underperformer or two hitting screens. However, with Bachchhan Paandey, Samrat Prithviraj and now Raksha Bandhan missing the mark at the box office, this has become a hat-trick of flops for Akshay.
