Box Office: English Vinglish has a dream run in Japan

Bollywood has always been fascinated and obsessed (in that order) with exotic foreign locales like Swiss Alps, London and the much recently 'discovered' Japan. The recent times have shown the filmmakers that, besides shooting the Indian films abroad, the foreign shores can also be a goldmine for Indian cinema as far as Box-Office collections are concerned. There are many examples of the same that mirrors this fact.

Talking about Japan, the film which has set the country's Box Office on fire is none other than the Sridevi starrer English Vinglish, which has also done well in Hong Kong, Germany, Taiwan and Korea. The film has set the Japanese box office ringing with a bumper JPY 42,608,115 (US $ 420,000 approx) and continues to run successfully in theatres. With this announcement, the film which released on June 28th this year across 33 screens in Japan, also becomes the second biggest Bollywood film there after Three Idiots. Readers may recall that the film's grand premiere, which was held in Tokyo on May 27th this year was a huge success and was attended by its leading lady Sridevi along with First lady of Japan, Akie Abe and famous Japanese singer, Agnes Chan.

English Vinglish not just marked the comeback of veteran star Sridevi on the silver screens, but also became a source of inspirations for many real life Shashi Godboles (the character played by Sridevi in the film). This film, which was about the awakening a woman's self-respect, indeed won lots of hearts and critical acclaim everywhere, both, from the masses and classes alike.
