Bollywood filmmakers have always been in pursuit of making high grossing films, hence setting up new box office records. However, with the opening up of the Japanese market for Bollywood films, the battle just shifted shorelines. While till now Aamir Khan's 3 Idiots that released back in 2009 was the highest Bollywood grosser in Japan collecting JPY170,000,000 i.e. approx US $ 1.6 million, Sridevi's English Vinglish that release recently in the east has been fast catching up.
In fact Eros International's English Vinglish, which released in across 33 screens in Japan on June 28 this year, continues to perform very well at the box office with a whopping US $1 million and still counting. With an overwhelming response from the audiences and theatres packed to capacity, the film released in another 17 odd screens additionally, taking the total screen count to 50 in across 20 cities in Japan.
The grand premiere of the film held in Tokyo on May 27, this year was a huge success and was attended by its leading lady Sridevi along with First lady of Japan, Akie Abe and famous Japanese singer, Agnes Chan. The film has also met with unprecedented success in other territories like Hong Kong, Germany, Taiwan and Korea.
