Yesterday after much promotion and hype the Akshay Kumar starrer Bellbottom released. Produced by Vashu Bhagnani the film hit a total of 1,600 screens across India. However, with Covid-19 protocols still in place theatres that are just opening now after a long time feature only 50% occupancy. In fact, in certain states theatres have not yet reopened, but despite this Bellbottom opened on a decent note.
While the move to release in theatres has been lauded by trade circles for helping rejuvenate the distribution sector, it does not necessarily ensure box office collections. In fact, keeping with estimates Bellbottom has managed to draw in approx. Rs. 2.75 cr. on its opening day. Interestingly, Bellbottom which is the first release post the second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic has opened below Roohi.
This slow opening is being attributed to the fact that key markets are still shut, especially Maharashtra that usually contributes 30% to a film’s collections. Coupled with this, the working weekday release of the film, the reticence of the audience to venture into crowded public places, low key buzz, lack of marketing and the Covid-19 protocols restricting occupancy have played spoilsport.
Currently, with Saturday and Sunday being festive occasions of Onam and Rakshabandha buzz is that the business of the film will likely see an increase. In such case following the usual trend pre-covid estimates state that Bellbottom could well draw in Rs. 15 cr. in its opening weekend.
