Hollywood rises… again!

By Bollywood Hungama

The dominance of Hollywood cannot be ignored. Let me recall an important statement I made in one of my earlier articles. In the present scenario, film-makers finalizing the release date of their movies need to keep tabs/vigil on the release date of not merely Hindi movies, but also Hollywood biggies. The smashing business of Hollywood biggies like THE AVENGERS, THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN and THE DARK KNIGHT RISES, all 2012 releases, is a clear indicator that Hollywood movies have made deep inroads into the Indian theatrical business space.

No significant Hindi title opened last Friday and the ones that made it to cineplexes [MERE DOST PICTURE ABHI BAKI HAI, GATTU and CHALLO DRIVER] didn't leave a mark either. Expectedly, THE DARK KNIGHT RISES fetched an omnipotent start at urban centres, making a big dent in the business of COCKTAIL as well, which attracted the multiplex audience in hordes the previous Friday. This Hollywood biggie continued to dominate all through the weekend, amassing a tidy total despite a limited release.

The holy month of Ramadan has commenced and as many as four prominent films, all backed by reputed names, are slated for release during this month: KYAA SUPER KOOL HAIN HUM, JISM-2, GANGS OF WASSEYPUR-2 and of course, EK THA TIGER. It goes without saying that a sizeable chunk of the movie-going audience will stay away from cineplexes all through this month, but it will be interesting to see how these films, especially the first three, will fare at the ticket window in India and also on the international shores. Fingers crossed!
