LAGE RAHO MUNNA BHAI - MOVIE REVIEW By: KZ Musafir It's a curse in the film industry that when a sequel releases (usually with a lot of hype) it ends up bombing and lacking the entertainment of the first installment. 2006 is the wake up call for sequels in Bollywood (which happen to be SUPERHIT), unlike the previous sequels which had bombed. Many agreed that the recently released blockbuster KRRISH was better the prequal...yet many miss the family touch in KOI MIL GAYA. But there's no doubt LAGE RAHO MUNNA BHAI is a sequel (new episode) that breaks the curse. So, were the experienced writers and crew able to bring back the 'yari' and 'masti' of Munna and Circuit? Is it possible that a movie like MUNNA BHAI MBBS be created again? Well the answer is.... YES! AND YES! All we could tell our gifted Munna Bhai crew is....LAGE RAHO WITH MUNNA BHAI!!! WE WANT MORE!!! To start with, MUNNA BHAI MBBS was a laugh-a-thon never seen before...as it also gave a message about laughter. This year is full of loud, yet appreciated comedies (PHIR HERA PHERI, GOLMAAL). But LRMB is just like the previous episode, full of laughter, emotion, and now...a stronger message... BAPPU!!! Yes, LRMB revolves around our gunda bhai meeting the father of our nation...Gandhiji! Well here's how the story goes: In this perfect world of a simple life sans any tension or 'lafda', dear Munnabhai encounters a trouble. A trouble that goes by the name of love! And the girl with whom he is besotted is someone whom he has never seen! She is 'Jhanvi' [Vidya Balan], a RJ who appears in her daily radio show! Everything about Jhanvi's voice makes Munna freeze and listen to her voice for hours at stretch. Whether it's her opening greeting of 'Good Morning Mumbai' or the rest of the words that flow from her, Munna loves just about everything about her. And now he wants to marry her! In a world of complexities, even this turned out to be quite a simple exercise for him. Except for the fact that as per Jhanvi's knowledge Munnai is not a 'bhai' but a professor. And the subject too is simply matchless! HISTORY!! From the present day 'bhaigiri' to the days in the past of 'history', it's quite a journey for Munna! Well, this is not enough as truly convinced about Munna's credentials, Jhanvi now has a task set for him i.e. to deliver a history lecture to her entire family (old people in a old age home) Munna is in a soup but as always there is Circuit to get the things back in order. He comes up with a plan that was designed to sort out Munna's simple problem centered on love! Little did Munna and Circuit know that the outcome of this plan would change the lives of everyone forever? This is because something unexpected happens! PRESENT meets the PAST! From HISTORY, a historical figure stands right in front of Munna in the PRESENT! It's time for Munna to come face to face with none other than GANDHIji. How did that happen? And what would the outcome from hereon? What happens when a 'bhai' meets a 'reformer'? Will the sparks fly? Or will the combination of the two make things happen differently? Or create something new? This includes Lucky Singh [Boman Irani] once again as Munna's rival, Victor [Jimmy Shergill], and Dia Mirza. Well I don't want to spoil the fun, but trust me, EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS MOVIE MAKES SENSE, including the cleverly thought out scene of Munna meeting Gandhi :) Hats of to Raj Kumar Hirani and Vidhu Vinod Chopra for recreating the Munna and Circuit duo with everything we have seen in MUNNA BHAI MMBS and even more. Best part is that it is completely original. Earlier, RANG DE BASANTI had tried giving a message of improving our government and society by refering to Bhagat Singh. This was a bad attempt, unlike LRMB which will 100% remind people of Bappu and remember him in their hearts. The message was clear and simply done...Very effective.The script of LRMB is perfect except for some moments where Circuit is missing and the storyline is concentrated on the love story, which is as entertaining and funny. Positive Points: * The sequence with Circuit and Lucky in the beginning. * The sequence with Circuit and Munna discussing about Bappu, very funny. * Munna trying to win the contest on Jhanvi's show, * When Munna meets Jhanvi. * Munna and the whole city following the steps of Gandhi aka Ganghi-giri. * Every other mini comedy scene which includes Lucky Singh getting well soon...(can only understand after seeing the movie) * The sets of the song 'Samjho Ho Hi Gaya' Negative Points: * Old age home(called 2nd Innings) a big point of the story, may be unattractive for some spoiled teenagers(trust me...I've seen the public opinion), like the film SHARARAT. * no...No....NO Jaadoo ki jhappi :( * One or two scenes which were over dramatic (not funny), but that's okay...we'll prefer that anytime unlike Karan Johar's drama. The songs are a highpoint in the movie because they are good, they don't slow the movie down and they are very short. The most fun songs to watch and here are 'Lage Raho' and 'Samjho Ho Hi Gaya'. ' Aane Char Aane' is a fun filled song sung by the new comer from Indian Idol 2. 'Pal Pal Har Pal' reminds you of 'Chan Chan' with Gracy Singh. But the most catchy song, also used as background is the 'Bande Mein Tha Dum........vande Matram', which hold the best lyrics. The direction is fabulous, as well as everything else behind the camera. Now for the acting, Arshad Warsi has improved a lot and showed more of Circuit in this feature. There were a few moments in the beginning where Warsi was stealing the show and the best lines from Sanju Baba. This shows that nobody else could perform Circuit's acting better than Arshad himself. Vidya Balan is beautiful in her different look from PARINEETA. Boman Irani is astounding as the loud punjabi builder. He had recently been doing awful comedy (PYARE NOHAN), but he has returned back from where he was first found. Dia Mirza comes late in a descent role. Ditto for Jimmy Shergill in a shorter role than the prequel. The unnoticed, Dilip Prabhawalker, is definately going to be the new talk of the town as he had an astounding performance as Ghandi. 'But I didn't know Ghandi looked that dark skinned'. And the special appearance of Abhishek Bachchan only enhances the look of the film. Yet again, it is Sanjay Dutt who steals the show and definitely he is the best actor for Munna's role. Dutt looks very aged in the movie, but he is only getting better. He is astounding from the beginning to the end with his loving and cute role. Hopefully, no one steals his best actor award this year, which he equally deserved in MBBS. Hence, LAGE RAHO MUNNA BHAI is the best sequel ever made, since it's very difficult to decide which one is better out of the two. If the same crew continues to make the MUNNA BHAI series, easily nobody can get bored of Bollywood's most memorable characters from today, Munna and Circuit! SO, LAGE RAHO!!! ****- MAX!!! The day one, when I heard that Munnabhai M.B.B.S sequel is coming up, I was sure that we can’t get the same laughter episode again, which Rajkumar Hirani had given us in Munnabhai M.B.B.S. Before entering the cinema hall, I was having some expectations that it would be another entertaining movie, but not equal to or better than the first episode of Munnabhai, my expectations were not so high. But believe me, when the screen splashes, and the circuit image came out on the screen with the mind-blowing background song (Chanda Mammu Soo Gaye Soraj Chachu Jaage), I got the same smile on my face which was previously watching the M.B.B.S episode. And than for three hours Munna and Circuit make me laugh so much that my stomach gets pain. I enjoyed the movie a lot, all the sequences, right from the starting till the end, it was a great time to watch them again, and must say that Raj (Rajkumar Hirani), Munna (Sanjay Dutt) and Circuit (Arshad Warsi) proved me wrong, because they have given us much better episode than previous. I personally think that this version has more fun rather than M.B.B.S episode. A must watch movie for everyone. The best scenes according to me are, Press Conference, where Munna gets emotional, and the interval scene, where Munna say SORRY to Circuit. Remaining all scenes are great, especially Lucky (Boman Irani) scenes where he receives flowers for the ‘Get Well Soon’, secondly when Munna meets Gandhi Jee for the first time in the library. Circuit’s all scenes are fantastic, I like the way Munna solves the problems of peoples with Ghandhigiri, especially Victor’s (Jimmy Shergill) problem, Great job Mr. Hirani. And thanks a lot for giving us such a wonderful movie. We learnt a lot and we enjoyed a lot too. Songs are well composed, when you listen them on your player you feel that its just about an ordinary album, which has nothing much special in it. But on the screen they are too good, especially Ho Hi Gaya, I enjoyed that song a lot, and than Pal Pal is too finest song in the movie. Show stealer none other than Munna and Circuit, because without Circuit Munna is incomplete and without Munna Circuit too incomplete, so both have great “Jodi” and right timing. Jhanvi (Vidya Balan) is looking gorgeous, I think she is up to the mark, the way she has performed her role is fantastic. Boman Irani is superb too, though have grey shades but well attempted. Jimmy Shergill is good in special appearance, Diya Mirza is so-so, Abhishek Bachchan is also good in small role. On the whole, for me it’s a mind-blowing, fantastic and excellent movie. A must watch movie for everyone. And a message to the team of “LageRaho Munna Bhai” that please makes such movies in future too, we love to see you again and again. So Lage Raho…

Arrey koi tension ho to apun ko batane ka……..are you are wondering whats wrong with my dialect???????Ya, you guessed it right …….thats the after effect of apun ka bhai----“MUNNA BHAI”. This year indeed saw the rise of many sequels be it the laugh riot PHIR HERA PHERI or the super hero KRRISH but none of them could surprass their predecessor’s popularity.But nonetheless they were huge blockbuster hits…..So does LAGE RAHO MUNNA BHAI(LRMB) meet the expectations??????Is it more hilarious than the first part???Read on and all questions will be answered…… First and foremost ….. LRMB is a new chapter in the life of Munna and Circuit not a continuation of the first one. Most of the thespians of the first part remain in this sequel giving it the much desired nostalgic feeling but they don upon new guises this time round. So you still get to see the rivalry between Boman and Sanju but it no longer remains that of a principal and student .The only new addition to this cast is Dilip Prabhavalker(pardon me if I got the surname wrong) who plays the part of GANDHI. This time round Munna falls in love with a radio jockey Jhanavi(Vidhya balan)……her “GOOD MORNING MUMBAI” inflection rings bells in his heart .His desire to meet her gets satiated when he wins a quiz regarding BAPU. So now Munna wears a garb of an erudite History Professor and a true GANDHIAN to impress his girl.When researching about Gandhi to give a lecture ,to Jhanavi’s Dado(and his friends), Munna starts feeling the presence of Gandhi around him.Is this plain hallucination( “chemical ka locha” as munna describes it) or has the spirit of Gandhi decided to pay a visit??????Thats for you people to find out……How Munna then transforms his ways of GUNDAGIRI to GANDHIGIRI forms the crux of the film…….the way he counters the virulent remarks of Boman with Gandhi’s help is utterly entertainable. So is this a movie of zealous preachery ?????Not at all ……. Who says entertainment and gyaan cannot be mixed in the same glass??? With LRMB , Raju Hirani manages to produce a cocktail of the two…….and the drink is indeed repleting……at no point of time would you find the movie sermonizing but yet when you leave the theatre you would have definitely learned a thing or two. Dialogues are first rate (especially Vidhya’s intro on the “fast life” of GEN X is completely relatable).Cinematography is captivating and is filled with vibrancy.Music by Shantanu (coupled with the meaningful lyrics ) is definitely more melodious than the previous version. The songs are picturised innovatively and act as stepping stones for the script’s flow(and not as a hindrance as normally Bollywood songs do).The soulful ”Bande Ma Tha Dum” continues to haunt you .Screenplay is taut.The story is very different from the otherwise hackneyed plots that are churned out these days. Vidhya Balan as the chirpy RJ is pulchritudinous. She performs her part with great elegance.Boman Irani as Lucky Singh is simply fantastic .The character fits him to the T. But the show stealers for the day are undoubtedly SANJU and ARSHAD.Their synergism is the what makes the movie a “CLASS APART”.Their comic timing is impeccable.Arshad’s talent of evoking laughter in the audience by just his movements and expressions(sans dialogue) is remarkable.Sanju baba does look old but his enthusiasm is still sparkling bright. So overall a fantastic film to watch……..will go on to say that this was indeed better than its predecessor. Mast picture hain MAMU……….have tried real hard to find some blemishes in the movie ,but as you can see I find none. Let me know if there were any flaws that you found.Till then LAGE RAHO MUNNA BHAI……..waiting for many more INNINGS of the MUNNA CIRCUIT DUO. P.S.------Life is indeed strange..….kabhi khushi toh kabhi gham……..the contrasting nature of life is depicted by the two recent movies I watched.Last week’s AAP KI KHATIR (the worst movie I have watched to date) made me redefine the word “FLOP” and this week’s LRMB(one of the best movie’s I’ve experieced) kept my faith in the fecundity of Indian Cinema.

Back bole to...sequal to Munna Bhai MBBS. But this story doesn’t starts where Munna Bhai MBBS stopped. It a different story. Though the main two characters are still the same. Sunjay Dutt as Munna Bhai @ Murli Prasad Sharma and Arshad Warsi as Circuit. Munna is no doctor in here ... this time he is a History Professor ... He is in luv wit RJ Jhanvi played by Vidya Balan ... everytime Jhanvi says ... Good Morning Mumbai ... Munna's heart skips a beat ... he feels the sun shines on him and everytime she says Good Night Mumbai ... he just doesnt stop thinking of her ... so one fine day comes his chance ... there is a "Mahatma Magic" quiz on radio and the person to answer all the qs rite regarding Mahatma Gandhi @ Bapu get to go to the studio ... and now wat wld Munna want more ... he gets the help of some professor and scores full marks and there he heads to the studio ... he poses as a history professor and this starts all the problems ... meanwhile Circuit ... all this while like a loyal fren ... is always with Munna and he helps Munna in everything ... Though one will see similar faces like Boman Irani and Jimmy Shergill but their characters here are different. Boman plays a builder, he is loud n he is Punjabi...so the combination goes well ;) ... If he isnt busy working, he is bz doctoring pic with famous ppl ... u shld see this one part ... he is doctoring his pic with Bush ... n when asked "but u have neva been to America" n Boman replies "but Bush has come to India" ;) Jimmy Shergill plays a young man ... Victor who loses his dad's savings in share market ... Munna helps him out ... and he gets back to reality ... All of u prolly wonder wat Mahatma Gandhi has to do with this movie ... n I feel the earlier title was good enuf ... "Munna Bhai meets Mahatma Gandhi". Coz this time it isnt only abt Munna and Circuit but how Bapu's principles changes Munna the goon to Munna the good man ... the Munna who was so use to beating ppl and stuff ... how he changes his ways by following the Gandhi principles is smth one cld learn frm ... like i always say 'there is a nicer way of saying things and doing them' ... this movie too teaches exactly tat ... eg. ... instead of getting angry with some1 and abusing him....Munna sends him flowers and wishes him well... there r many such instances in the movie ... The movie is not only hilarious but also teaches something…All I can say is I enjoyed it and neva compared it to Munna Bhai MBBS ... but wat I miss was the Jadoo Ki Jhappi ;) Sunjay Dutt was excellent ... he has aged ... but even more charming ... he is just like wine ... the older it gets ... the betta ... his performance was good Arshad Warsi was good in his role ... he and Sunjay def share a good chemistry tho it dint impressed me much in Anthony Kaun Hai ... perhaps only Raju Hirani knows how to bring them together Vidya Balan was good...for a newcomer she is good at wat she does ... Boman is good too but at times i did find him loud but i still like him Jimmy Shergill and Dia Mirza were adequate in wateva little role they had

The prophetic leader from the past has a blast as he tells Munna how to deal with an avaricious builder (Boman Irani) and other ouch-casts of society. <BR><BR> It looks like Circuit has competition this time. Even as he remains a fiercely loyal Hanuman to his mentor Munna, Munna this time shifts his loyalties and attention to the lovely RJ Jahanvi and to Mahatma Gandhi who keeps appearing in Munna's day-time reverie to advise the benign gangster on love life and other vagaries of being human. <BR><BR> Munna and Circuit, arguably cinema's most adorable and roguish reformists since Laurel and Hardy go about the business of generating humour out of the pathos of the human condition. The sequences, all fiercely and famously path-breaking have us in splits. <BR><BR> Watch the love-lorn Munnabhai answer a Gandhian quiz on a phone-in radio quiz with the help of kidnapped professors…It's one of the most comically animated sequences seen in the movies of the new millennium. To look at LAGE RAHO MUNNABHAI as a 'serious comedy' is to seriously undermine the motivations and impact of the series (and let’s face it, there's no getting away from the Munna-Circuit jodi for the producer and director). <BR><BR> Playing the sweat-smart ruffians with hearts of cool, Sanjay Dutt and Arshad Warsi bring a chirpy enchantment to their roles. Their parts have hefty hearts. But there's more. There's an innocence and a desire to make the world a better place. <BR><BR> Though some of the music and jokes are derived from the first film, this time Hirani takes the duo further down the road of moralistic mirth to create what can easily be deemed the most significant satire in Indian cinema since MUNNABHAI MBBS. <BR><BR> This time Munna meets Mahatma Gandhi. It's an interesting combination. While outwardly the two seem as disparate in time and personality as Sunil Dutt and Sanjay Dutt both are in essence all heart and no guile. <BR><BR> The Munna-Mahatma dialogues sparkle with satirical wisdom, thanks in no small part to Dutt and Dilip Prabhavalkar (who plays Gandhiji with tongue-in-cheek conviction). The dialogues by Hirani and Abhijeet Joshi constantly probe the festering moral and social system of the nation without getting hysterical on homilies. The individual scenes make light of national issues without ever trivializing the cult of the conscience. <BR><BR> At heart—and boy, does this film have it in plenty! LAGE RAHO MUNNABHAI is a parable on love and companionship. Whether it's Munnabhai's bonding with his faithful companion Circuit (watch the two actors turn that potentially mawkish sequence at the dockyard into something special) or Munna courting love (Balan) and Gandhism, the narrative dodges false notes by remaining sincere to the characters. <BR><BR> Every actor gets a chance to special in this enriching take of non-violent protest and radio-activity. But Dutt and Warsi go beyond. Sanjay Dutt proves again that he has shaped up into a fine performer who can mingle poignancy with satire the way Raj Kapoor did in those parables to innocence like SHRI 420 and AWARA, or like Sunil Dutt did in MILAN and MEHERBAAN. <BR><BR> Warsi manages to steal some scenes from Dutt. That's how effective he is! Surely he’s one of the finest young actors today. Vidya Balan is gloriously glamorous and likeable, though she could’ve toned down those expressions of coy contemporeity that make her look like a model for cornflakes. <BR><BR> In fact some of the emotional moments like those between Jimmy Shergil and his screen-father Pariskshat Sahni or that flamboyant wedding finale where the bride Dia Mirza tells the truth about her horoscope at the cost of turning her groom away, do not have the emotional impact which one thought they would. <BR><BR> Though a wee short of tears, LAGE RAHO MUNNABHAI goes a long way in creating an enduring and endearing parable on the importance of being earnest in a world of growing duplicity. The narrative is so unfailingly heartwarming and the characters so full of human kindness, you wait for the plot to be weighed down by excessive self-importance. The fall never happens. LAGE RAHO MUNNABHAI remains true to its characters till the end. <BR><BR> One of Munna's favourite words is 'daring'. <BR><BR> It must also be Rajkumar Hirani's favourite word. In a world of extravagant cynicism and rancour he dares to dream of Gandhian peace. When the aggressive Munna turns his other cheek, you wonder if Gandhian values have a place in our heart. <BR><BR> They most certainly do have a place in Hirani's art. Shall we take it up from there?
