The background of Don's story is Kuala Lumpur (KL). As a Malaysian residing in KL, my reality-check questions would be: 1) You cannot overspeed on Malaysian highways. There are many hidden cameras on the road and the Malaysian police will capture your car number and send fines to your house address. Fines for overspeeding are typically RM300 (USD90). 2) You cannot escape from the police on the highway. At each end of the highways, there are toll plaza where you have to pay the fees for using the highway. Normally the police will wait you there. 3) Shahrukh Khan Mercedes convertible bears a registration number NZW 1. The Malaysian state that carries alphabet 'N' currently is doing the series NBT, which means the series NZW will only come about around the year 2020 or 2035. Furthermore, alphabet 'Z' is only reserved for the Malaysian Army. 4) I do not know whether the hotel used in the movie - Mandarin Oriental - will allow drug baron to use its Presidential Suite Room. I think you have to be a super-VIP, like a President or Prime Minister of some-sort, to use that kind of room. 5) It is impossible for Jasjit and Dapuu to walk on the skybridge of Petronas Towers to move from Tower 1 to Tower 2. If you enter Tower 2, you cannot walk to Tower 1. That is the strict Petronas' policy. If you walk from Tower 2, the guard will be waiting at Tower 1 and ask for your Petronas Identity Card. 6) It is unlikely that Malaysian police will transfer a criminal from one place to another using an aeroplane. They will normally transfer you using a van or prison-lorry. Don must have been a super-criminal to deserve the fabulous treatment of Malaysian police. 7) The operative office of Insp DeSilva uses See-Hoy-Chan building, located next to American Embassy in KL. That office building is empty. That office has long been completed, but it has been empty since then. Rumours say that the American government lease all the office space in the building to guard the safety of its embassy which lies nextdoor. All-in-all, this story is great. A must-watch movie.

20th October, 2006 saw the release of DON, starring Shahrukh Khan as DON; Priyanka Chopra and Arjun Rampal among others. Farhan Akhtar marketed the movie as “his” version of the 1978 Nariman Irani’s mega blockbuster Don, starring Amitabh Bachchan, Zeenat Aman and Pran. It certainly is “his” version, as he not only changed quite a few sequences but also the end completely!!DON, as a movie, is technically well made. Its got grandeur, style and great music - a perfect masala for a sure shot box office success. In fact, the very fact that it was promoted as a “remake” surely had everyone wondering what Farhan’s magic would do. The movie, undoubtedly is well made. What it grossly lacks is the brilliance of the actors which formed the essence of the original Don. Shahrukh has been portrayed well, with all the style and grandeur but even when donning the best designer suits, he can not match the charisma of the original Don (Amitabh). In Don-I, when Amitabh enters, you can feel the sense of power oozing from him. He terrifies as well as amuses you, unlike shahrukh, who is simply incapable of having that kind of command over the role and the audience!!! Priyanka is probably the only actor in the entire movie who manages to do a better justice to the role enacted by actors in the original make. She scores over Zeenat by a hundred. As for the rest of the actors, they grossly fall short. Now, coming to the end of the movie. It is shown that DON is actually alive and his look-alike Vijay died long ago. Such an end probably satisifed the creative instinct of Farhan, but in retrospect, it kind of glorifies crime. It gives the audience the message of “The victory of evil over good”. May seem like not-a-big-deal. But, just think about the effect this may have over the mind of a 5-yr old who probably is a huge shahrukh khan fan and would do anything to imitate him. Personal creativity set aside, actors and directors have a far bigger social responsibility than they assume. More on this in the next blog. To conclude, DON is a good movie with bad actors and an unacceptable end!

Don has pro's and cons/ 1st of all this entire movie was carried by Shahrukh. he made the film and he pulled it through the entire time. He was truly impressive. He did the double role great. Shahrukh has proven he can be versitile with his acting...Don can attest to that. However the film was choppy often lacking a smooth flow. The character development of arjun rampal and others was veryy poor. there were needless scenes and needles information. It shoudl have been trimed and edited better. the songs were great. Especialy the Banaras number. The ending was exciting and had everyone saying wowow. But non the less bottome line SRK made this movie watchable without hime it would not have been bearable.

I will express my simple and straightforward expression. I was very apprehensive when I went to watch the movie with my young daughter (i was of the same age when I watched the original). I was wonderinh whether this verison will erase the memory of the original? I was very happy of the outcome with a very candid opinion. I dont remember what I have watched and certainly my daughter is not going to remember this movie as i have remembered and relished in my lifetime. The original is masterpiece because of simplification of the storyline, well defined characterisation, good music and of course last but not least the mesmerising performance by AB. Farhan Yaar, you are very good for creating the original 3 guys enjoying their time in Goa, but dont tamper the classics just because you have the benefit of the meduim with you. Use this power to create something original and please please I repeat dont ever to think of the sequel as you indicated. Thank you

MEW DON KO CRITICISE KARNA MUSHKILL HI NAHI NAAMUMKIN HAI!!! (Its not only difficult to criticise the NEW DON,indeed its impossible!!!) Well,DON made by Farhan Akhtar is a REAL DON because,in Chandra Barot's DON he just hyped the chartacter of DON saying that DON can do this,can do that, its impossible to catch DON blah blah blah.And that silly DON is not only caught,even killed by DCP. D. Silva (played by Ifteqar).But in this New DON its not the case,her the DON keeps his lines "DON KO PAKADNA MUSHKIL HI NAHIIN NAAMUMKIN HAI". Shahrukh has proved himself to be a DON not only in the film but in film industry.He proved that even now he can play the action hero characters.I was amazed by the Action Scene in which he fights for Parachute in the air.The shot seemed to be realistic.Srk has given his best to his film.From here onwards SRK is not only KING KHAN or BAADSHAH OF BOLLYWOOD but also the NEW DON OF BOLLYWOOD.Hats off to SRK and Farhan. Priyanka was at her best.She was superb in the action scenes. Kareena played her role splendidly.Boman Irani is fantastic.Arjun did a fine job.Even Isha koppikar played her role finely.Its a well Choreographed,Briiliantly Narrated and Visualised, Musical and Thriller and Technological Film. All in All a good movie to watch over again and again.
