Now with this movie there a couple of lessons for two set of people. One for Filmmakers like Ram Gopal Verma, for understanding that even Bold subjects can be treated with finesse and presented in a manner that it caters to the tastes of masses. The second one is for all those who with every flop reinstigate the debate for Mr. Bachchans retirement.. With this performance he has again proved that he is an old wine which can only get better with time and even at 64 stands at a level where the todays so called “Sexy-Superstars” can only dream to be.
It is perhaps only Big B who inspires creative people like R Balki(director) to conceptualise and create stories like these on the silver screen .Cheeni Kam is a complex yet simple, salty yet sweet, slow yet engrossing attempt by Balki to re-tell a Nishabd or Lolita, an attempt which is sure to touch the hearts of the people at large. Though the concept of 64 year old marrying a 34 old should have very few takers in our society, it is the presentation of this content which has made all the difference. In a quiet, humorous manner it makes you accept the story as believable reality. Even the suggestive humor doesn’t take on ur nerves.Performances form Tabu, Paresh , little girl and old mother are a treat to watch. The chemistry bw Big B & Tabu defies all laws of gravity. Music is only to support the screenplay, but still Illyaraja is anyday a better composer than this. On the flip side, first half of this tale could have been much crispier. A faster pace would have made prospects better.
All in all whether you take it on an entertaining scale, performance scale or believe in weighing the style quotient of Mr. Bachchan’s pony tail – On every front you will get an affirmative nod for seeing this movie. On commercial side, movie is and will be lapped in Multiplex audiences. In the interiors the well polished stuff will still find the going tuf, thanks to its Alien concept. This Admaker is a filmmaker to watch out for!
