EXCLUSIVE: Ayushmann Khurrana hints at joining the Stree – Bhediya universe: “My brother is already there… we should meet on-screen!”
Ayushmann Khurrana has always loved watching and being part of offbeat genres. While the actor left audiences impressed by playing a never-seen-before role of a Betal (aka vampire) in his recent release Thamma which is also a part of the world which includes franchises like Stree and Bhediya, few fans knew that this Khurrana boy shared a fascination for this horror-comedy a genre. During a candid conversation with Bollywood Hungama, Ayushmann opened up about his personal connection with the genre, especially because his own brother has already made a mark there.
EXCLUSIVE: Ayushmann Khurrana hints at joining the Stree – Bhediya universe: “My brother is already there… we should meet on-screen!”
"One thing is for sure, that I was always a fan of mad and horror-comedy heroes. I have seen all their films. And my brother is in Stree, in Stree 2. So, I always had that I should also be a part of it. And somewhere, we should meet ahead, both our brothers," Ayushmann reveals, referencing his sibling Aparshakti Khurana’s role in the Stree universe.
As Bollywood embraces the 'comic scare', Ayushmann’s excitement matches that of every movie buff hoping for crossover magic. "Dino (producer Dinesh Vijan) is also like a brother to me. So there was a kind of so it reflected," he says, hinting at soft discussions and dreams of a fraternal horror-comedy crossover.
Ayushmann went on to talk about how the genre has evolved, especially after the pandemic: "They had a subject in mind. Four or five years ago, around the pandemic, about Betal. And we heard Vikram Betal’s story in childhood. So I was very excited for that. And it happened, Amar narrated the one-liner. And Dinu was there, and the story evolved into whatever it is, right."
He credits the genre for bringing out a different, fun side in villains and heroes alike. Pointing to Nawazuddin Siddiqui’s performance, he says, “Nawazuddin Siddiqui brought a lot of quirk in the film. He brought a fun factor in the villain which should be there, who enjoys his lines. A joker-type character. So I think that's a lot of meat.”
Ayushmann believes that the fusion of horror and comedy is here to stay, and he’s ready for it, “I think its setup for Thamma has been done. And this is an origin story. And I am glad that the origin story got this opening. It’s not a sequel, it’s a first Thama for one. So I think ahead when these meet each other, like Janak’s character or my brother Bittoo’s character. So I think that will be a lot of fun.”
With the Maddock Horror Comedy Universe growing, fans can only hope producers are listening and that a Khurrana brother collaboration is in the cards!
