"Deeply Rooted in Indian Psyche": Javed Akhtar credits Rakesh Roshan for Koi Mil Gaya's success; latter reveals story behind Jadoo’s creation
In the four-episode docu-series The Roshans, veteran filmmaker Rakesh Roshan and lyricist-writer Javed Akhtar take viewers behind the scenes of one of Bollywood’s most iconic characters—‘Jadoo’ from Koi Mil Gaya. The series dedicates a segment to the creation of the beloved alien, offering a fascinating glimpse into the creativity and challenges involved in bringing Jadoo to life.
"Deeply Rooted in Indian Psyche": Javed Akhtar credits Rakesh Roshan for Koi Mil Gaya's success; latter reveals story behind Jadoo’s creation
The Birth of Jadoo: A Creative Challenge
Javed Akhtar, reflecting on the success of Koi Mil Gaya, highlighted how Rakesh Roshan’s storytelling made the extraterrestrial theme relatable to Indian audiences. “This movie is about extraterrestrials. It’s quite surprising that he made it so successful. Otherwise, a layman may not relate to someone from another planet. They would have wondered what was going on. Is it a science fiction? What is it? But his narrative is always rooted deeply in the Indian psyche. Because of that, even people from small towns of India could relate to it, and they loved it,” Akhtar shared.
The Birth of Jadoo: A Creative Challenge
Rakesh Roshan revealed that creating Jadoo was no small feat. The filmmaker wanted an alien who could emote through his eyes, making the character endearing and relatable. “I wanted to make a small alien, who could emote with his eyes. So, I went to Australia and there’s a studio called Bimmini Effects, looked after by a husband and wife, James and Lara. I narrated the story to them, and the next day they called me and showed me a sketch to explain their idea. Immediately, I said, ‘Yes. This is good,’” Roshan recalled.
The technical challenges of bringing Jadoo to life were immense. Roshan explained that the character was operated externally, making the filming process painstakingly slow. “When I started shooting, I could only take one or two shots in a day. Because it is operated from outside. So, sometimes Jadoo looked at Hrithik, sometimes it didn’t. Its eyes keep going this way or that,” he added.
The Legacy of Jadoo and the Krrish Franchise
The success of Koi Mil Gaya and the endearing character of Jadoo paved the way for the Krrish franchise, which includes Krrish and Krrish 3. Fans of the franchise have been eagerly awaiting the fourth installment, Krrish 4. In a recent interaction with Galatta Plus, Rakesh Roshan provided an update on the highly anticipated film.
“I know people have been waiting for a long time now. But somehow, we have been unable to get the budget right. The scale of the movie is quite massive this time. If I try to reduce the scale, the movie just seems like a common film,” Roshan explained.
