25 Years of Ishq EXCLUSIVE: Indra Kumar BREAKS silence on Amitabh Bachchan’s role in the film: “I still regret not having him on board and I wish Mr Bachchan was there in the film”

Ishq (1997), starring Aamir Khan, Ajay Devgn, Juhi Chawla and Kajol, completed 25 years on November 28 and although it gave a wholesome entertaining experience, the impact would have been more had Amitabh Bachchan featured in the film. The megastar was supposed to enter the narrative in the second half of the film but sadly, it was not meant to be. On Ishq’s 25th anniversary, director Indra Kumar exclusively spoke to Bollywood Hungama on this aspect.

When asked if it was true that Amitabh Bachchan was supposed to do a role in the film and that he was going to feature in the song ‘Mr Lova Lova’, Indra Kumar confirmed in the affirmative. He then said, “But it’s my bad luck that we were not able to have him on board. So, we had no choice but to cut that role and then we decided to feature Johny Lever, who was already in the film, as Bachchan saab’s duplicate. I still regret (not having him on board) and I wish Mr Bachchan was there in the film.”

 

What exactly was the role of Amitabh Bachchan? “It was an action role,” revealed Indra Kumar and then added, “Bachchan saab Ajay aur Aamir ko ek scene mein bachate hai. But when it was not possible to get him, we changed the plot. Thankfully, we were able to come up with a brilliant plot point for the second half of the film. I think the producer even gave the signing amount to Bachchan saab.”

 

Is it fair to call it a supporting role? To which, Indra Kumar answered, “No, it was a guest appearance. He was going to feature in the action scene and the song.”
