25 Years of Dil Se: Mani Ratnam has not watched Shah Rukh Khan, Manisha Koirala and Preity Zinta starrer since its release: “I have only seen bits and pieces, and that too on mute”

On this occasion, when talking about the legacy of Dil Se, Mani Ratnam told Scroll, “I haven’t seen the film in 25 years, so I don’t know how it has stood. I have only seen bits and pieces, and that too on mute – or any of my other films, for that matter.”

When asked about the criticism he received over the years for the lack of clarity on Manish Koirala’s character Moina, he added, “The reason was, there were several troubled border states, and we were looking for a representative story. Otherwise, it would have become a story of a particular place. The film represented several places that were going through turmoil. You do what you think at that point in time. If you accept something that works very well and is appreciated, you also accept something that hasn’t connected or is not well-received. Maybe the way that you’ve told the story hasn’t reached? You learn from it and move on. You can’t be too worried about the appreciation or the criticism that comes your way.”

As per YouTube Movies, the synopsis reads, “In this story, the focus is on Amarkanth Verma (Shah Rukh Khan), a deceased army officer's son. As a program executive for All India Radio, he travels all over India to interview citizens to mark the fiftieth anniversary of Indian independence. On one of his trips, he meets and falls in love with an intriguing and mysterious woman Moina (Manisha Koirala) who seems to enjoy leading him on. He follows her all the way to Ladakh. After only two days together, she leaves him to join a group of insurgents on a mission. Heartbroken, Amarkanth agrees to marry Preeti Nair (Preity Zinta), a woman of his mother's choice. Meanwhile, Moina is chosen to lead a suicide mission on the Republic Day Parade and when she runs into Amarkanth again where the mission is to take place, their destinies intertwine.”

At the 44th Filmfare Awards, Dil Se won 6 awards including Best Female Debut (Preity Zinta) and Best Music Director (AR Rahman). At the 46th National Film Awards, the film went onto win Best Cinematography and Best Audiography.
