Box Office: With Stree and The Nun raking in moolah, ‘witches’ rule the roost this weekend

Amongst all the films running in the cinemas currently, only two films: Rajkummar Rao and Shraddha Kapoor’s Stree and Demián Bichir, Taissa Farmiga’s The Nun are making a mark at the box office in the domestic circle. It is interesting to note that both these films belong to the horror genre and have impressed masses with their content. While Rajkummar-Shraddha’s film (which released on August 31) is on the cusp of entering the coveted Rs. 100 crore club, The Nun from The Conjuring series is already giving tough competition to all Bollywood releases currently running in the theatres, including Stree.

The horror-comedy film helmed by Raj & DK has been holding its ground strongly at Rs. 82.29 crore (Week 1: Rs. 60.39 crore combined with Weekend 2: Rs. 21.90 crore).  Hollywood’s The Nun enjoyed a massive opening on Friday in the domestic market and has garnered the total of Rs 28.50 crores in its first weekend, including paid previews on Thursday. Day wise break-up of this film is:

 

Thursday: Rs 30 lakhs

 

Friday: Rs 8 crore

 

Saturday:  Rs 10.20 crore

 

Sunday: Rs 10 crore

 

Other movies which released with The Nun on September 7 have dwarfed in comparison with this Conjuring spin off. With Stree and The Nun dominating the box office over the weekend, other releases Paltan, Laila Majnu and Gali Guleiyan opened poorly and did a lukewarm business.
