Actor Isha Koppikar has reflected on her career in films, revealing that she regrets turning down a role in Farhan Akhtar’s Dil Chahta Hai. In an exclusive interview with HT Lifestyle, the actor recalled how the part eventually played by Sonali Kulkarni opposite Saif Ali Khan had initially been offered to her. However, she had to decline the opportunity because of her prior commitment to Pyaar Ishq Aur Mohabbat.
Known for working across different genres and film industries, Isha has been part of projects such as Company, Don, Don 2 and Ek Vivaah Aisa Bhi. Over the years, she has taken a selective approach to choosing films, prioritising meaningful roles and creative satisfaction over simply moving from one project to another.
Isha Koppikar on making creative choices
During the conversation, Isha spoke about the importance of maintaining creative independence as an actor. Reflecting on her career choices, she explained how financial dependence on acting could sometimes influence an artist's decisions and lead to compromises.
“If you are financially dependent on your acting career, you tend to compromise creatively at some point. I think it is very important not to make creative compromises if you are passionate about acting. I started at the age of 16, and I had nobody to guide me because I don’t come from a film background.”
The actor also spoke about the challenges of navigating the industry without coming from a film family. Having started working at a young age, she had to make career decisions without the guidance that someone with an established industry background might have had. Her approach, she indicated, was to remain mindful of the projects she chose and avoid compromising on her creative preferences.
Isha Koppikar recalls turning down Dil Chahta Hai
Among the career decisions she looks back on, turning down Dil Chahta Hai remains a regret. The 2001 film, directed by Farhan Akhtar, featured an ensemble cast that included Aamir Khan, Saif Ali Khan, Akshaye Khanna, Preity Zinta, Sonali Kulkarni and Dimple Kapadia.
Recalling how she missed out on the role eventually portrayed by Sonali Kulkarni, Isha said that she had been offered the part but could not accept it because she was already committed to another film.
“The role played by Sonali Kulkarni opposite Saif Ali Khan in Dil Chahta Hai was offered to me, but I had to turn it down because I was committed to Pyaar Ishq Aur Mohabbat. I regret that decision,” she said.
Her revelation offers a glimpse into the difficult choices actors sometimes face when multiple projects overlap. While professional commitments can require them to pass on opportunities, Isha's recollection shows that some decisions continue to stay with her even years later.
