Rashami Desai has returned to television with Star Plus’ Sayonee after staying away from the small screen for several years. In a recent interview with Screen, the actor opened up about her decision to take a break from daily soaps, the challenges she faced in the entertainment industry and how she was told that her career was over.

Rashami Desai on taking a break from television
Reflecting on her time away from regular television projects, Rashami revealed that she had consciously stepped back from work to focus on herself and explore other opportunities. During this period, she worked on a Gujarati film and appeared in the Zee5 film Hisaab Barabar. However, she admitted that she was not keen on taking up many projects at the time.
“I had stopped working in between for 3-4 years. I did a Gujarati film, and I did a film on Zee5, Hisaab Barabar. I didn’t work a lot; I didn’t feel like it. I did get TV offers, but I couldn’t connect, or maybe I was not ready in that moment. I usually disappear for 3-4 years after doing a show. I really wanted to unlearn a lot of things. I did a lot of workshops; I was working on myself."
The actor explained that her experience of working on television for extended periods had taught her several lessons. She felt the need to unlearn certain things, attend workshops and work on her personal and professional growth before returning to the screen.
Rashami Desai on online trolling and being stereotyped
Rashami also spoke about the impact of social media trolling and revealed that she had stopped reading comments on social media for the past three and a half months. She expressed concern over online abuse, suggesting that some trolling could be paid for. The actor also stressed the need for limits on online harassment, pointing out that such abuse had contributed to people taking their own lives.
Speaking about the treatment of women in the entertainment industry, Rashami said female actors were often judged by their appearance and glamour rather than their abilities. She felt that women had been stereotyped for too long and deserved recognition for their work and dedication.
The actor maintained that she had more to accomplish in her career and was confident about her abilities. However, she felt that she had not received the right platform to showcase her potential. She also spoke about being generalised as a television actor and how the medium was often viewed differently from other entertainment platforms.
She said, “When someone is so passionate about her work, you cannot just look at her in a glamorous way. It happened to me, and I decided not to work then. TV does not make you an object. It gives you a platform. It is a very underrated platform. TV has a stronger reach than any other platform, but it’s seen as taboo. So many people told me I am an overexposed face. I was told my career is over.”
With her return to television through Sayonee, Rashami has opened up about the professional judgments she faced during her break and her decision to take time away from work. Her remarks also highlighted her views on the perception of television actors, gender stereotyping and the challenges of navigating the entertainment industry.
