HTHS mid-week box office report

By Bollywood Hungama

The pre-release reports of HUM KISISE KUM NAHIN are very encouraging. Those who've seen the strictly-monitored preview shows can't stop singing praises of the film. The advance booking has been tremendous as well. The opening weekend everywhere is expected to be 100%, considering the hype the film has generated.

All eyes are on…

The two films on Shaheed Bhagat Singh, scheduled to open next week. 23RD MARCH 1931 SHAHEED will be released with approx. 600 prints, while THE LEGEND OF BHAGAT SINGH will be released with 500 plus prints worldwide. But prior to their release, another film on Shaheed Bhagat Singh – SHAHEED-E-AZAM – will open this week.

Dost dost na raha…

Sunny Deol and Rajkumar Santoshi were the best of friends at one time. The combination gave GHAYAL, GHATAK and DAMINI to the audiences. Santoshi had also directed Bobby's launch pad BARSAAT. But today the dosti has turned into dushmani. Sunny's camp claims that it was Sunny who first bounced off the idea of making a film on Shaheed Bhagat Singh to Santoshi. But Santoshi denies it, saying that he had announced the film a couple of years ago in 'Trade Guide'. Sad, how equations change in the film industry.

Sunny days…

This is an observation. June has proved lucky for Sunny Deol starrers. BORDER and GADAR were released in June and both proved blockbusters. 23RD MARCH 1931 SHAHEED is also slated for release in June. Will Sunny score a hat-trick, only time will tell. Incidentally, a trustworthy source tells me that Sunny is planning to release his film a day earlier – on June 6 (Thursday) – instead of June 7. Premiere shows in U.K. are also being planned.

Spider's web…

Kamaal ho gaya! Columbia TriStar informs me that the opening weekend of SPIDER-MAN has been a whooping Rs. 52,913,034 in India. SPIDER-MAN's historic debut has established a number of firsts for Hollywood in India:

* Highest opening in box-office history in the foreign language film category.

* Highest opening day ever for a foreign language film.

* The widest release for any foreign language film – 224 prints and 250 screens.

Mixed reactions…

HUM TUMHARE HAIN SANAM has met with a mixed response in India. The film is faring very well in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar (has all chances to prove a hit here!), but the response is mixed elsewhere. In Mumbai city-suburbs, the first 3 days were 95% (approx.), while Monday was 88 to 90% (approx.)… Ditto for Ahmedabad, where the film did very well in the opening weekend (Friday to Sunday), but dropped from Monday… Baroda and Rajkot are rock steady. The film has been appreciated… Pune recorded excellent collections on the first three days, but a drop was noticed on Monday… The opening in Kolkata was fantastic, but a drop was witnessed on the second day itself, mainly in the suburban theatres… The film opened to packed houses in Nagpur, but on the second day, the 12 noon show was not full. And on Monday, the 12 noon and 6 p.m. shows showed a drop… In Indore, the heat wave has affected the business to an extent… In Jaipur, the first 3 days are impressive at one theatre, not the other one. A drop was witnessed on Monday… Hyderabad is excellent and the first week figures will be impressive.
