Rang De Basanti brand of liquor banned in Punjab Click here to add this article to My Clips

By Bollywood Hungama News Network, January 18, 2008 - 14:50 IST

The Aamir Khan starrer Rang De Basanti sure did create a lot of buzz when it released in 2006. The film, which achieved both critical and commercial acclaim, is now back in the news but this time for a completely different reason.

Apparently, a local country liquor brand named Rang De Basanti, faced protests in the state of Punjab by supporters of martyr Bhagat Singh, just two days after it was launched in the market. The supporters opposed the name as it's derived from a famous poem by legendary freedom fighters, Ram Prasad Bismil and Bhagat Singh.

The Punjab Government immediately stepped into action and Chief Minister Prakash Singh Badal ordered immediate withdrawal of the spirit from the market.

Excise and Taxation commissioner of Punjab Mr. S .S. Brar also regretted the name given to the liquor brand and then company is now withdrawing nearly 4000 bottles of the brand from the market.

Surely, the name Rang De Basanti, for a liquor brand didn't go down in the right spirit with the local people of Punjab.
