Visual Computing Labs (VCL), a division of Tata Elxsi has accomplished the VFX for the latest television commercial of Panasonic Inverter AC featuring Katrina Kaif. The renowned studio was entrusted by Cutting Edge Films, the production house to create the realistic Robot which plays a vital role along with Katrina in the television commercial. VCL also needed to create the CGI to help demonstrate the functioning of the 'eco navi' technology which helps the air conditioner sense the level of activity and detecting human presence.

Henri Barges, the director of the commercial was clear on how the commercial would appear right from the start of production, along with the characteristics the robot would have. The prerequisites of the robot were that it needed to be energetic, playful and interactive.

The commercial was shot at a studio in Film City - Mumbai, and to make the set look like an apartment was on the 20th floor, chroma backgrounds were added through the window, which were replaced later on with live action footage.

Vishal Anand from VCL said that Panasonic was very keen about the look of the robot; they required it to look extremely real and be a part of the environment. For this VCL shot multiple HDRI references at the location. These HDR images were compiled and later used to light the robot.

Proxies were generated by artists from the studio for the scenes and the characters to reflect back into the robot. Since the robot was interacting with Katrina and other characters throughout the commercial, it was critical that these proxies helped in the robot’s reflections and shadows in the environment, floor and furniture appropriately.
