Some memories are not something we actively search for—they simply wait to resurface at the right moment. For actress Sandeepa Dhar, a recent visit to Kashmir turned into an emotional journey through her family history, forgotten belongings and the familiar beauty of her homeland.
Sharing moments from her trip on social media, Sandeepa wrote, “There are some memories you don’t go looking for. They just wait for you.” Her words reflected the personal significance of her return to the Valley.
Last week, Sandeepa visited her ancestral home in Kashmir, a house that has remained largely untouched since the exodus. Without electricity or running water and with very few belongings left inside, the house offered a glimpse into the family’s past.
During the visit, she came across a detailed wooden cabinet believed to be around 80 to 90 years old. The piece had remained almost intact despite the passage of time. Recalling the discovery, she said, “It felt like finding a little piece of our past still waiting for us.”

She also found several smaller items that carried their own memories. Inside an old cupboard were vintage Air India boarding passes and baggage tags, believed to be 30 to 40 years old. Sandeepa described them as “tiny pieces of paper, completely insignificant at the time, but somehow they survived everything.” She also discovered her uncle’s tailored suits, including some made in the United Kingdom, adding another connection to her family’s history.
During the trip, Kashmir’s landscapes also caught her attention. She shared glimpses of the flowers at Shalimar Bagh, marigolds, Nagin Lake and the views from Pari Mahal. While Dal Lake remains one of Kashmir’s best-known attractions, Sandeepa expressed a personal preference for another waterbody, writing, “Everyone talks about Dal Lake, but Nagin Lake will always have my heart.”
A visit to Shankaracharya Temple added another quiet moment to her trip. Through her photographs and reflections, Sandeepa highlighted how returning to familiar places can bring back memories that remain connected to them over the years.
On the work front, Sandeepa will next appear in Netflix’s upcoming series Chumbak, alongside Neena Gupta and Sumeet Raghavan. The actress has worked across films and streaming projects, with Chumbak being her next release.
