Bollywood superstar Salman Khan joined the chorus of voices grieving the loss of legendary actor and filmmaker Manoj Kumar, who passed away at the age of 87. Taking to X on Friday, the Sikandar actor paid an emotional tribute, writing, “Manoj Kumar Ji… a true legend. Thank you for the unforgettable films and memories.” The succinct yet poignant message reflects the deep admiration Khan held for Kumar, fondly known as ‘Bharat Kumar’ for his patriotic cinematic contributions that shaped Indian cinema’s golden era.
A Star’s Farewell to a Cinematic Titan
Manoj Kumar, whose illustrious career spanned decades, left an indelible mark with films like Upkar, Purab Aur Paschim, and Kranti. His death in the early hours of April 4 at Mumbai’s Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital, following a prolonged illness, has left the industry and fans in mourning. Born Harikrishan Goswami in 1937, Manoj Kumar rose to fame in the 1960s and ‘70s, earning the moniker ‘Bharat Kumar’ for his focus on themes of unity and national identity. His contributions earned him accolades like the Padma Shri (1992) and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award (2015). As news of his cremation scheduled for April 5 spreads, fans and celebrities alike are reflecting on his timeless work.
Besides Salman, Aamir Khan said, “Manoj Kumar was not just an actor, and film-maker, he was an institution. I have learnt so much watching his films. His films were often based on important social themes which brought him really close to the common man. My heartfelt condolences to his family,” in a statement. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President of India Droupadi Murmu also paid heartfelt tributes.
