After seven years, Karan Johar is back as a director. Starring Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt in his directorial Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, the film is creating the right kind of noise and receiving positive word of mouth from both critics and audiences. The film marks his 25th year in the film industry as a filmmaker. With the film collecting Rs. 60.22 crore in the first six days of its release, the makers are happy with the response of the film. In an exclusive conversation with Bollywood Hungama, Karan Johar sat down to talk about the unanimous response from critics and the audience, the messaging, and what the film has achieved. During the conversation, the director spoke about the ‘Tum Kya Mile’ and ‘Dhindhora Baje Re’ songs being an ode to Yash Chopra and Sanjay Leela Bhansali, respectively.

The filmmaker said, “When I did the Kashmir song (‘Tum Kya Mile’), it was my ode to Yash Chopra because I'm obsessed with Yash Chopra. When I did ‘Dhindhora Baje Re’, it was my ode to Sanjay Leela Bhansali. It is my ode because I love his mastery, the way he literally paints celluloid with such beautiful frames. So it was pretty much my brief was I wanted an SLB set. Yeah, I said I want it to look like a Sanjay Leela Bhansali set. Of course, the team gave it their own spin, but it was. I'm not going to shy away and lie that these are not my inspirations. Of course, they are because I pay homage. respect to their craft and their vision. But I believed in those situations because I had the core conviction that I really, really believe in this and I don't know how it will be accepted, because in this day and age of high action, tent pole event cinema, this is a human drama, interrelationships.”

Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani is currently running in theatres. It also stars Dharmendra, Jaya Bachchan, Shabana Azmi, Tota Roy Chowdhury and Churni Ganguly. It was released in theatres on July 28, 2023.
