EXCLUSIVE: Karan Johar says there’s no formula to make successful films: “Anyone who says that is probably living in a land of delusion” : Bollywood News

Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt’s Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani is creating the right kind of noise and receiving positive word of mouth from both critics and audiences. Helmed by Karan Johar, the film marks his 25th year in the film industry as a director. With the film collecting Rs. 60.22 crore in the first six days of its release, the makers are happy with the response of the film. In an exclusive conversation with Bollywood Hungama, Karan Johar sat down to talk about the unanimous response from critics and the audience, the messaging, and what the film has achieved.

When asked that after 25 years of making films, has he understood the pulse of the audience? Karan Johar said, “How can you have a finger on the pulse? The pulse is not, is not a scientific phenomenon. The pulse is just something that keeps evolving and keeps changing and drastically changing by every year, not even every decade or every five years. How can anyone have a pulse? There's no formula to success. Anyone who says that is probably living in a land of delusion.”

The filmmaker added, “There is no formula; you just do what you can of course, some of us who grew up on the fodder of Hindi cinema and Indian cinema, some things just come naturally in our DNA. Because we are big fans of Hindi cinema and Indian cinema, so some things have been imbibed, that we emulate. I'm a huge fan of so many yesteryears, geniuses and who have actually coloured the palette of Hindi Cinema. I am really a student who is actually always imbibing and emulating from them. That's all I can do. But if you ask me how to make a hit film, there’s no quick formula. One thing that you have to have, which sometimes shifts even with me, I'm a human being, is core conviction.”

Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani is currently running in theatres. It also stars Dharmendra, Jaya Bachchan, Shabana Azmi, Tota Roy Chowdhury and Churni Ganguly. It was released in theatres on July 28, 2023.
