Bollywood Ka Character Certificate: 3 Idiots’ Rancho and his real report card – identity fraud, paper theft and ten years of ghosting

en Bollywood News Bollywood Ka Character Certificate: 3 Idiots’ Rancho and his real report card – identity fraud, paper theft and ten years of ghosting

NOTE - This series revisits some of Bollywood’s most memorable characters through a deliberately humorous, present-day lens. It is not intended as serious criticism, moral judgment or an attempt to diminish the films and characters we love. We are simply removing the background music for a few minutes, examining familiar actions from a real world perspective and finding the comedy hiding in plain sight. Please take the charges lightly, the only verdict we are seeking is a good laugh.

Bollywood Ka Character Certificate: 3 Idiots’ Rancho and his real report card - identity fraud, paper theft and ten years of ghosting

Bollywood Ka Character Certificate: 3 Idiots’ Rancho and his real report card – identity fraud, paper theft and ten years of ghosting

For more than 15 years, 3 Idiots has taught us to pursue excellence, reject rote learning and reassure our hearts by saying, All is well.

Perhaps it is time to ask the heart a slightly more uncomfortable question:

Who exactly was Rancho, and did anybody at ICE ever verify his Aadhaar card?

Rancho or Phunsukh Wangdu, or Ranchoddas Shamaldas Chanchad, depending on which stage of the investigation we are discussing is celebrated as one of Hindi cinema’s greatest students. He is also a man who earned an engineering degree under somebody else’s name, broke into the college director’s office, stole a confidential examination paper, publicly sabotaged a classmate’s speech and then disappeared from his closest friends for ten years.

Educational visionary? Certainly.

A straightforward candidate for background verification? Not entirely.

Why we worshipped Rancho

To be fair, it was impossible not to love him. Rancho challenged an education system that rewarded memorisation over understanding. He stood up to the terrifying Viru Sahastrabuddhe, encouraged Farhan to follow photography, helped Raju overcome his fears and repeatedly demonstrated that learning should be driven by curiosity rather than marks.

He even helped deliver a baby during a power failure using available equipment and the collective engineering ability of a student hostel.

But remove the background score, and his college career begins to resemble a case study that would keep several departments occupied.

Charge No. 1: The curious case of the missing student identity

The biggest twist in 3 Idiots reveals that Rancho was not Ranchoddas Shamaldas Chanchad at all.

The real Ranchoddas belonged to a wealthy family. The boy we knew as Rancho studied in his place because the family wanted the degree, while the intellectually gifted Chhote wanted the education. After graduation, one kept the knowledge and the other kept the certificate.

It is a moving commentary on class and privilege. It is also identity fraud with excellent emotional justification.

For four years, Rancho attended lectures, appeared for examinations and topped his class using another person’s name. The degree was then claimed by somebody who had not completed the course.

Today, the registrar would faint. The accreditation body would arrive. LinkedIn would introduce a blue tick for degrees.

And Rancho’s defence “I came here only to learn” would be inspiring, but unlikely to satisfy the university’s legal counsel.

Charge No. 2: The examination paper was not open source material

Rancho opposed the obsession with marks. He repeatedly argued that students should seek knowledge rather than chase grades.

Naturally, he later broke into Virus’s office to steal an examination paper.

Pia provided access, Rancho and Farhan entered the office, and the paper was obtained to help Raju pass an examination designed to make him fail. Raju, displaying the strongest ethical clarity in the sequence, refused to use it.

In the real world, Rancho would not be called an educational reformer after this incident. He would be called the student seen entering the director’s office in CCTV footage.

The university disciplinary committee would hold six meetings. Virus would prepare a PowerPoint titled Consequences of Undisciplined Innovation. Chatur would volunteer as a witness before being asked.

Charge No. 3: Chatur was bullied in the name of character development

Yes, Chatur was arrogant. Yes, he memorised without understanding. Yes, his competitive obsession made him unpleasant.

But Rancho and Farhan secretly altered his Hindi speech, replacing key words with obscene ones and allowing him to deliver it before the college director and an important guest. The result was public humiliation, followed by a decade-long rivalry.

Cinema presented this as a legendary prank. A modern college would call it targeted harassment, reputational damage and a preventable auditorium incident.

Rancho never apologised for making him unknowingly deliver an obscene speech in front of the education minister.

Charge No. 4: The decade-long ghosting

Rancho transformed Farhan and Raju’s lives. He became their closest friend, guided their most important decisions and promised that friendship was greater than fear.

He then vanished for ten years. No calls. No letters. No reunion invitations. Apparently, one of India’s greatest scientific minds was unable to develop a functioning group chat.

Farhan and Raju had to follow clues across the country to locate him. Pia, with whom Rancho had shared a deep romantic connection, was also left without closure.

Today, it would be described as extreme emotional ghosting with a Ladakh reveal.

Charge No. 5: Bathing was apparently an outdoor activity

While other students used the hostel bathrooms, Rancho casually took a shower in the open campus area, treating a public educational institution like a private farmhouse.

The scene established him as carefree, unconventional and completely unbothered by authority. In the real world, however, it would probably establish him as the subject of an urgent hostel circular.

Today, the incident could invite complaints over indecent exposure, violation of campus-conduct rules and the unauthorised conversion of common property into a bathing facility.

What would happen to Rancho today?

The admissions department would investigate his identity.

The examination committee would investigate the stolen paper.

The student welfare office would investigate the Chatur speech.

The alumni office would investigate why its celebrated topper technically did not exist.

A corporate recruiter would enter “Ranchoddas Shamaldas Chanchad” into the verification portal and receive a response saying: Candidate found, candidate different.

Even Chatur’s proposed business deal with Phunsukh Wangdu would be delayed until the compliance team completed enhanced KYC.

Rancho would still become famous but perhaps through a six-part streaming documentary titled All Is Not Well: The ICE Impersonation Scandal.
