Sunny Deol started off his career in the romantic drama Betaab in 1983. Directed by Rahul Rawail, the film also marked the launch of actress Amrita Singh as the leading lady. Later, Sunny acquired the image of an action hero. Although he tasted tremendous success in Arjun (1985), again with Rawail, the film that made him into Bollywood’s poster boy for action roles was Ghayal because of the hardcore nature of the film.

Directed by Rajkumar Santoshi, Ghayal was an emotional action film about a young man Ajay Mehra (Sunny) who loses his elder brother (Raj Babbar) after he is killed through the orders of the ruthless Balwant Rai (Amrish Puri). On top of that, Ajay is framed for the murder of his own brother and is also accused of having an illicit affair with his sister-in-law (Moushumi Chatterjee). When in prison, Ajay makes a plan to flee and avenge his brother’s death by killing Balwant Rai. Meenakshi Sheshadri played Sunny’s love interest and his biggest support.

Ghayal completes 33 years today. To mark the occasion, Sunny took to Instagram and shared a compilation of short scenes from the movie containing some of its iconic dialogues. For the unversed, Ghayal is known for some of the most powerful lines in Hindi cinema mouthed by Sunny. The actor revealed a trivia related to the film in the caption that read, “A film that made me Producer because Nobody else wanted to make it. Celebrating #33YearsOfGhayal, a film that eventually won everyone’s heart.”

Sunny is now gearing up for the release of his keenly awaited Gadar 2, which will hit the cinemas on August 11. Directed by Anil Sharma and also starring Ameesha Patel and Utkarsh Sharma, the movie is the sequel to the 2001 blockbuster Gadar: Ek Prem Katha.
