Thamma Box Office: Film takes spectacular opening; emerges as Second-Highest MHCU release after Stree 2

This Diwali, Ayushmann Khurrana and Maddock Films have set the box office ablaze with Thamma, which has registered an outstanding opening day collection of Rs. 25.11 crore. With this figure, Thamma confidently claims its place as the second-highest opening day performer in the Maddock Horror Comedy Universe (MHCU), trailing only the franchise juggernaut Stree 2, which soared to an unmatched Rs. 55.40 crore.

Thamma Box Office: Film takes spectacular opening; emerges as Second-Highest MHCU release after Stree 2

Thamma’s debut is all the more remarkable when put against the history of MHCU releases. The original Stree made a mark with Rs. 6.82 crore, Bhediya launched with Rs. 7.48 crore, and Munjya, another entrant to the universe, managed Rs. 4.21 crore on its first day.  What gives Thamma its rare edge is its achievement as a standalone film, introducing audiences to the Betaal legend without the groundwork or brand loyalty that powers a sequel like Stree 2. That it nearly quadrupled the openings of Stree, Bhediya, and Munjya signals a turning point for what festival audiences now seek out—originality, thrilling storytelling, and charismatic new heroes.

Maddock’s marketing and Ayushmann’s reputation for unique, genre-defining roles have clearly paid off, delivering not only a commercial triumph but re-shaping expectations for horror-comedy content. Trade watchers and box office analysts alike note that Thamma’s success spans across India’s East, West, North, and South, reflecting a nationwide appetite for fresh stories and cultural mythologies. Thamma stands as proof that, even amidst the excitement and proven crowd-pull of long-standing franchises, audiences respond in huge numbers to originality and innovation.

The film’s robust opening promises an exceptional extended holiday run, with producers and distributors keenly anticipating its cumulative weekend and week one totals. For Maddock Films, Thamma is not just a win—it’s a clear message. In modern Bollywood, unique concepts and risk-taking stars can transform genre pieces into festival mainstays.

With Thamma, the MHCU, already rich with hits, now moves forward with renewed momentum for unconventional blockbusters and for 2025, Diwali belonged to authentic storytelling and fresh cinematic energy. Going forward, with a six-day extended  festive weekend the business of the film is expected to see exponential growth with collections hovering between the Rs. 60-70 cr mark.
