Rann is a film that promises to expose the Indian media, which today is influencing the lives of millions. Ram Gopal Varma through the film deals with a very relevant issue in today’s time of the corruption plagued news channels – the TRP battles, unethical journalism, masala entertainment in the name of news et al. A compelling, hard-hitting experience is what you expect from a film like Rann, but does it deliver? Vijay Harshvardhan Malik (Amitabh Bachchan), the head of India 24×7, is one of the most reputed journalists in the country. Following strict ethics, Malik believes news should always be the mirror of truth. But such principles and ethics, against cut throat competition, leads to falling TRP’s. His son Jai (Sudeep) concerned about the slide in business and TRP’s takes it upon himself to revive the channel. But his plans are squashed when his business model is leaked to one of the channels biggest rivals – Headlines 24×7 headed by Amrish Kakkar (Mohnish Behl). To his rescue comes Mohan Pandey (Paresh Rawal), a Prime Ministerial candidate who would go to any extent to achieve his goal. Will Jai succumb to the evil plan hatched by the Mohan Pandey? Will he involve his father Vijay Malik? Watch the movie to find out. Positives * The first hour is a bit of a drag, but the director more than makes up for it with a gripping second half. Plenty of twists and turns, which while predictable, is well-written. * Ram Gopal Varma narrates the story well and like always relies heavily on the treatment and well-etched characters to carry the film. * The casting in perfect, almost every actor seamlessly get into the skin of their respective characters and stay there throughout. * The dialogues work, those given to Bachchan and Paresh Rawal are powerful. Negatives * The film lacks freshness and suffers from this seen-so-many-times-before kinda feel. Similar background score, intense characters, dark surroundings.. you name it. Nothing new fom RGV here, the treatment is much similar to Company, Sarkar. * Bachchan’s character is flawed. One of the very first lessons in journalism is – confirm and re-confirm the source. How could a reputed and experienced journalist like Vijay Harshvardhan Malik, fall into the trap set by his son so easily? Without once verifying the facts and airing the anonymously sent video tape? This very scene takes an immense amount of impact away from the film. * The much hyped expose on the media is a dud and completely lacks shock-value. There is nothing in it about the media that we don’t already know. * The climax unnecessarily drags on and gets too filmy after a point. When Bachchan informally says “Purab….. ” with no introduction, no full name, it was more like addressing a family gathering than the nation. * Also, Rann is extremely predictable. No twist is too hard to predict, including the ending. You know exactly how the characters are going to behave and you know it much before you see it. * The camera work is trademark RGV, as the close-ups get irritating after a point. Performance (in order) 1. Amitabh Bachchan – No prizes for guessing. Bachchan is top notch and delivers a towering performance. The way he delivers the speech in the end, in itself is worth a trip to theaters. Not for nothing is he called the BIG B! 2. Sudeep – Not easy holding your own against Bachchan, but the south Indian actor does very well. Watch out for his last scene. 3. Ritesh Deshmukh – A restrained performance, Deshmukh is in great form. His casting is a masterstroke. 4. Paresh Rawal – Over the year Rawal has used his eyes very effectively, here, with eyes covered by sun-glasses, he relies entirely on his facial expressions and dialogue delivery to deliver a very powerful performance. Great actor, very under-rated in negative roles. 5. Suchitra Krishnamurthy – Again, perfectly cast, this leading lady from Kabhi Haan Kabhi Na does very well. 6. Mohnish Behl make an impression. 7. Rajpal Yadav is irritating. 8. The other ladies – Gul Panag and Neetu Chandra – are wasted. Shame that an actress of Panag caliber is cast in such a irrelevant role. Overall, Rann had immense potential to be a powerful drama. It works to a certain extent, but falls short of expectations. If you must, watch it for Bachchan’s brilliance or if your a fan of RGV films

I am quoting Taran "RANN is for those who enjoy serious cinema. It's more for the intelligentsia, for the thinking viewer. Definitely not for those who seek refuge in frivolous masala capers." So, I am not surprised if some of the viewers are giving 0.5 ratings and saying it a boring movie. RANN is definitely beyond their taste and level. RANN is a tremendous movie and an eye opener. It is made for the Indian democratic people and every true Indian must watch it. Very extraordinary movie, extraordinary performances, extraordinary direction, extraordinary story, extraordinary screenplay, extraordinary dialogues.

The jodi of Big b and Rajpal reminds me of waqt movie. Was a gr8 fun. And Jodi of Big B And Ritesh reminds of Aladdin. That too was cute. Thanx that RGV N Bib B not even reminds Aag for a second. That's the best thing. It was looking like bhansali's movie. SO congrats to RGV. hats off to all.

This high voltage, no nonsense thrilling drama that captivates your mind and engages you into its unpredictable screenplay has Ram Gopal Verma written all over it and it is indeed among his finest films. Rann is technically brilliant in every aspect. The subject is serious and seldom will you find a light moment and when the story demands it, Ramu enters the realm with all his might. Not a single song for diversion, not a single heroine dancing around, not a moment to edit, not a single mundane dialogue and not a stone unturned. This is cinema in its finest story telling form. Vijay Harshvardhan Malik (Amitabh Bachchan) is the Godfather of India's news media. Righteous and truth seeking in his approach, Malik always favors the truth over TRP ratings and sensationalism. His son, Jai (Sudeep) wants the company to prosper by catering to the viewers' choices while supporting his father's integrity. Naveen (Rajat Kapoor), brother-in-law to Jai, introduces Jai to Mohan Pandey (Paresh Rawal), the cunning politician who will cross all limits to gain his political mileage and together, they convince Jai to create news to gain a tremendous jump in the channel's viewership. Purab Shastri (Ritesh Deshmukh), the new comer in the channel is a devotee of Vijay Malik and as the sinister plot unfolds before him, politics and media unleash true mayhem. In all this, Amrish Kakkar (Mohnish Behl) stands to gain advantage out of his competitive positioning and his shrewdness. Rann moves at a reckless pace with a riveting narrative and explosive dialogue from its ensemble starcast. In terms of its distinct musical score, Sikkon Ki Bhookh, Gali Gali Mein Shor & Jana Gana Rann are very pertinent tracks to the movie's theme and will take repeated listening to catch the essence of the lyrics. Credit for a phenomenal screenplay goes to RGV and for optimizing the potential of such a strong cast of actors. Amitabh Bachchan is outstanding as the restrained and truthful media baron. His finest moment is towards the end when he comes in front of the nation, unravelling his channel's misuse. Paresh Rawal as Mohan Pandey is evil yet his confidence in his techniques is appalling. The smoothness with which he misleads the public in his speeches deserves some chuckles. Rajat Kapoor impressively plays the over ambitious businessman, Ritesh Deshmukh portrays the right amount of composure for his character while walking straight on RGV's guided path while Mohnish Behl deserves an applause for such an awesome come back. He is a capable actor and one wonders why his on screen shrewdness went unnoticed for so long. Gul Panag and Suchitra Krishnamoorthi are worthy in their roles while Rajpal Yadav renders some comic relief without digressing from the movie's theme. But RGV is the true hero of the Rann. With slick presentation, brevity, brilliant screenplay aiding the seamless narration and a no-nonsense, to-the-point approach in every scene, he conveys the movie's message in a thriller like socio-drama. Sikkon Ki Bhookh, Gali Gali Mein Shor & Jana Gana Rann are very pertinent tracks to the movie's theme and will take repeated listening to catch the essence of the lyrics. Rann is uplifting, enlightening, meaningful, intense and worthy of a large combo deal at the cinemas. 8.99 on a scale of 1-10.

Hi , my review for the film rann is simple , it's a very very beautiful films that's talks on the medias and how can it effect on a country . it's a story about a some menistior that will make a small laying new about other menistior so that he can take on the country with some help of the media . it's like how can we believe in media and how can it control our minds . the acting of amitab jii or mr.bachan is super bupper pupper . and the story is very unique . the newcomer also has a good acting and insallah will have a good films in future . in the end , the film can be rated in 3.5 from 5 . very good film , by the way I went with a friend of mine that he don't see hindi films much , he said that this film is very cool and I love it . If he said that it's a good movie , so we must day this film is wonderful , thanks for your time .

I was shock to see there was no Jana gana mana song but Rann is very well made movie for todays audience dont miss this movie the direction is fantabulos the performance are brilliant..Amitji outstanding Sudeep remarkable Ritesh,Rajat,Paresh,Mohnish were fantastic neetu and gul awsome...Cinematography is excellent story,screenplay is perfect. on the whole a must watch for all.
