Mastizaade Review {2.5/5} & Review Rating
EXPECTATIONS
For a film that goes with a title Mastizaade, you expect a lot of 'masti' in the music as well. Moreover, since Meet Bros Anjjan have been roped in as the composers (along with Amaal Mallik
and Anand Raj Anand chipping in as guests) and Kumaar is the key lyricist (along with Manoj Muntashir and Anand Raj Anand), there is some good dhamaal that awaits the listener.
MUSIC
It is a surprise beginning for Mastizaade, what with 'dandiya' beats kick-starting the proceedings. For a film with Sunny Leone in a double role, this dance number sung by Mika Singh, Armaan
Mallik and Amaal Mallik is a new experience for her due to the 'desi' flavor in the contemporary setting. While the hook-line 'Rom Rom Romantic' is actually pretty catchy, the overall
lyrics by Manoj Muntashir are pretty much in line with the theme and genre of the film, hence being pretty straight forward instead of beating around the bush to be double meaning.
Meet Bros Anjjan and Kumaar take over the scene from this point on and start their campaign with 'Hor Nach'. As the very title indicates, this one is a Punjabi 'bhangra' dance number
which moves ahead at an unrelenting pace and doesn't have any breathing moment whatsoever in it. Ritu Pathak is roped in to do the job and she is suitably exuberant in her rendition while not quite
minding the naughty lines by Meet Bros Anjjan around her.
Benny Dayal, the youngster behind many a dance numbers, joins hands with Meet Bros Anjjan for 'Kamina Hai Dil'. While the start is just right for the song, it is the hook-line of
'Ooa Ooa Ouch, Aaja On My Couch' - while leaving nothing really to imagination - which is catchy enough to join the ranks of a party number. This one has a 80s feel to it in the way it is
put together and reminds one of the Bappi Lahiri era gone by.
In the middle of this all, Anand Raj Anand makes a special appearance of sorts and brings on 'Dekhega Raja Trailer'. Nakash Aziz sings in a manner that has otherwise been reserved for
Udit Narayan and he appears to be totally letting his hair down for this one which has Neha Kakkar being an able partner. Carrying the feel of a quintessential 'desi' item number, this is for those
who want to have their dose of 'Munni', 'Sheila' and 'Rajjo' right at the beginning of the New Year.
The legendary line of 'Basanti In Kuuto Ke Saamne Mat Naachna' is rehashed by Kumaar for Meet Bros Anjjan's 'Mastizaade Title'. Again, though the opening of the song is just about
okay, it is the hook of 'Masti' while being coupled with 'King', 'Singh' and 'Welcome' that keeps you engaged. There is a 70s retro theme attached to the song with an
intermittent R.D. Burmanisque rendition which concludes the album on a high.
OVERALL
The music of Mastizaade is completely in line with the theme and genre of the film. It could well qualify as the adult soundtrack of the season and though one would have liked to see a
chartbuster or two more attached to it, the album does well in maintaining a good pace and unabashed attitude.
