Fresh from his debut hit film Jaane Tu …Ya Jaane Na, Kidnap hits the marquee this week starring Imran Khan, and Sanjay Dutt .Directed by Sanjay Gadhvi, who earlier made the Dhoom films for Yashraj which bankrolled its way to the banks on lavish style although without substance.Kidnap is also in the similar vein except for the fact that it wont make any money..Why? Because it’s a very bad film. The movie starts with a caricature narrative a kid in a juvenile jail and that’s sets the premise for a revenge thriller. The girl, Sonia (Minisha Lamba) dips into the sea to cool off her anger and wakes up perfectly coiffured and manicured to realize that she has been kidnapped by Kabir (Imran Khan) and he has just one motto to make her father dance to his tunes and go about solving seemingly obscure riddles which he will find at the oddest of places after the completion of the tasks demanded by the kidnapper,which as you see the movie will realize that Vikrant Raina (Sanjay Dutt) does with commendable ease.
Raina can reach Panvel from South Bombay in 40 minutes in peak traffic; break into his rival’s house to get a 1000 rupee note from his locker and that too from a high security system .How comfortable?
And all this while, an engagement party is going on downstairs which features a wannabe item number by Sophie Chaudry, which frankly is painful to the ears.Having made two thrillers the director should understand that Hrithik can frolic and let the screen on fire but Sophie is no Hrithik and you cant fool the people all the time, can you? There are gaping hopes in the screenplay. For one how and where does Kabir take Raina meet Sonia before they find out that he has held her captive in their own old house...? (What a stroke of genius)
Oh and also Kabir takes Sonia for a bath in the ocean, just because she says trying to be seductive that she needs a bath. In fact the girl likes the awesome water so much that, I am pretty sure that she is an Aquarian. and finally what and how is Kabir possibly avenging a grudge of so many years in the jail in just 7 days that too by making the proudly Raina feeling guilty above himself?
For a thriller, kidnap is slow to the pace where it gets boring and as it approaches its anti-climax, you are not concerned at all and just want it to be over. Moreover you can clearly see that the stunts were performed by the double, especially in the case of Sanjay Dutt and the blame should be taken by the director and the action director.
Vidya Malvade is wasted and that is a pity as she is a better actress than the one she is playing mother to.Minisha Lamba is a symbol of inanity each time she opens her mouth to say a dialogue and she should really sort out her cellulite issues before slipping into a bikini coz she has not got much to offer when it comes to acting.Sanjay Dutt looks jaded and unfit and simply goes through the motion of this notion picture. Imran Khan comes out relatively unscathed by disaster as he has shown variety and the ability to hold the screen in different roles, but sadly it won’t result in a hit film.Just a single star for Kidnap, not recommended.
