It looks like comedies are the new choice for debut directors to flaunt their skills in. Whilst Tarun Mansukhani made millions laugh with his out and out laughathon, DOSTANA, Sabbir Khan brings Akki and Bebo back with a bang in the form of KAMBAKKHT ISHQ, a glossy and glamorous comedy that makes you laugh right up until the interval, where after, everything breaks into pieces.
The screenplay, the pacing - all is fantastic and even the dialogues are hilarious. But as we get to the second half things start to feel rushed and even worse pointless. It actually looks like you're watching a debut vehicle. The climax, compared to such a beautifully directed start, is so dissappointing it's insane!
The over-promotion of Sylvester Stallone, Denise Richards and Branden Routh have made the hollywood actors have no impact on the audience whatsoever and even the overwhelming thought of seeing the Kodak theatre isn't so overwhelming after all.
Overall it's a 5 Star first half, 0.5 star second half. The writing here is clearly to blame.
The film belongs solely to Akshay. Had he stepped a toe out of line with this one he would've gone straight into the garbage disposal and to some extent he does overract - but overracting is what makes this guy funny! Kareena is fantastic and she looks great - though perhaps a little too thin. Aftab Shivdisani is a revelation. Amrita Arora is competent. Boman Irani is great, but a wasted talent. Denise, Branden and Sylvester are again wasted.
Overall Kambakkht Ishq ought to be "Kambakkht Dousra Ada" - it's almost like watching two different films back-to-back. I tell you, buy the tickets for the second half, then walk out.
