It's quite interesting to see that while the SRK and Karan Johar loyalists have given this movie the thumbs up, alot of viewers, critics etc have really hammered KANK!.
Let's face it, there is nothing wrong with the acting. Shah Rukh does a great job playing a character who not only is a cynic but one who has flaws and is far different to what we have become accustomed to. Sure it is a romantic lead role but this character is the polar opposite of say..his Rahul Khanna character in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. Also the rest of the cast deliver in their roles....Rani, Preity, Ambhishek and Amitji are all solid. The soundtrack and the cinematography are also world class. The costumes are exquisite and let's face it, every other visual and technical detail has been given addressed.
So people...what exactly is the problem? Just what is it that has made a lot of people scream out that this is "THE WORST MOVIE OF THE YEAR!!"?
I really do believe that it is the subject matter. Extramarital affairs, the cause and effect. Plus the fact that at the end of it all the 2 marriages come to an end also does not sit well with alot of people.
Extra marital affairs is some what of a tabboo in hindi movie making and the audience would much rather suspend all belief in reality and sit through 3 hours of song and dance ALA K3G, Dilwale Dulhanya Le Jayenge, Dil To Pagal Hai etc rather than witness something that is a little closer to home.
Karan Johar has delved into intelligent film making and has done it in such a way where he caters to cinema story telling needs of the greater majority.
While the top has been sugar coated, I really do think Karan has to be given credit fot taking the plunge and giving us such quality cinema and hats off to the 4 main players in show casing their talents. None of the 4 main characters are perfect yet they have qualities that are very real.
Come on people, let's grow up shall we. Watch the movie and enjoy the presentation for what it is and stop looking at it as something it's not and what you think it "should be."
All involved with this movie should hold their heads high. KANK is a must see and a must have in your collection.
