Kinda boring, but a few very beautiful moments sums up Dhobi Ghat for me. Personally I was kicking myself for catching this film in the theaters because in my opinion its the kind of film you watch on dvd, you can pause it when it makes you a bit sleepy (which it does at some points) and come back to it later. The film does have some nice moments though and Prateik and the girl that plays Yasmin are AMAZING! The best performances in the film. I did feel that Aamir Khan was miscast because with all the fresh faces who were the characters for me, somewhere I didn't see Arun, instead I saw Aamir Khan as Arun. Also the background score is excellent and hopefully they release a cd of it at some point.

DHOBI GHAT!!! Firstly it is a movie of Parallel cinema with intense subject and great performances.. Movie moves at a very slow pace and requires immense patience from its viewers.. If you are looking for something different from the usual commercial cinema, then this one is a must watch. Others' who prefer the traditional cinema will rate this one way below par.

Dhobi ghaat (Mumbai Diaries) - ***1/2 Does one remember appreciating movies viz. Ek doctor ki maut, Ek din achanak, Aakrosh, Suraj ka saathva ghoda, all these have one thing in common , they let the viewer take their own perspective as movie flows in different directions n ends on a open note. Directors like Shyam benegal, Govind Nihalani, Girish kasarvalli, Satyajit ray were pioneers of Indian art house cinema. Add to that elite list, one more director, Kiran rao though not of their caliber but shows definite signs of spark, sensitivity n brilliance. So d movie belongs to this genre n hence commercial movie buffs better STAY OFF it. The movie is an ode to Mumbai where d life n travails of 4 characters r followed. First we have Arun (Aamir) a painter who is loner living a strange life with hardly an emotional relationship, Shai (Monica dogra) a NRI who’s visiting Mumbai on a holiday as she wants a break from life n also wants a documentary during this period, Munna (Prateik babbar) is a dhobi by day, rat killer by night n shares a link between d two n finally Yasmeen (Kriti malhotra) whom we see only in the video recordings lived in d house in which Aamir lives now. With these 4 characters d story builds slowly n takes interesting developments showcasing d emotions beautifully , their interactions bringing d whole range of happiness, sadness, wishes, fears, trials n losses. Prateik comes out shining among d four leaving a lasting impression, his uncomfortable ness, shyness with shai, d modeling scene, his despair, smile, n climax scene he shows stamp of class. Same can’t be said for Aamir, who has a tinge of white hair, as it seems a little bit artificial, never d less his interest in d yasmin’s character bringing the artistic best out of him is another highlight. Among d female lead though yasmin’s character we get to see only thro d video clippings it still carries d full impact n gets into d act n succeeds in touching d right chord, from being d initially newly married happy gal to d depressed wife committing Suicide, she fits d role to the T. Finally shai played by Monica plays d sensual lady who initially falls for aamir but then shares a warm friendship with munna impresses to a great extent in her first outing. It is also about Mumbai, its festivity, its lesser known lanes, its people, its celebrations, its shopping, its problems, its bluntness, and its arrogance n finally its forgiveness’. One interesting feature being however good d characters seem to be it seems substance abuse n sleeping around is becoming an integral part of this new Mumbai culture with hardly any regrets about d same. The climax impresses d most when both prateik n monica let their emotions take them over, it bears a stamp of master class. All credit to the director kiran rao n for aamir for making it a interval less movie n succeeding in convincing d multiplex owners to showcase it in a one piece. Background story complements d story. So what’s amiss? Well I can say for one is slowness with which it builds but one can still argue art house is about slowness. Second except for prateik’s character, rest we keep wishing if they cud have been more elaborated, a sense of incompleteness. Well for people who can sit thro 95 mins of non commercial artistic show give it a try ïŠ

Dhobi Ghat is like a painting which U can decorate at home but its very tough to understand the Painting.....The movie making is New the credit goes to Kiran the camera work is fabulous, the Music by Gustav is so emotional n catchy the character's r well played Yasmeen (kirti) Out class Shai (monica) 100% Arun (Aamir) is Good he have been done better more better and Munna is Excellent fantastic n marvelous after all this the movie is not up to the mark as there are many Mumbai Dairies happened in recent past in bollywood as (Mumbai Meri Jaan, Thanks Maa, madholal keep walking, City of Gold and many more Kiran have been chosen some thing different story for her portral as she is excellent in story telling n Very Good in her direction on the whole the all effort is gone in vain as script is not so catchy n attractive for audience.

I like a good movie. I have sat through the slowest of slow art movies and enjoyed it, even loved it. There are numerous art movies that I have watched more than once. A good story always interests me. But Dhobi Ghat was not interesting. And it is definitely not a good story. For that matter, it is not even a story. Of the four "stories" in the movie, the only one that actually was a story was that of Yasmeen Noor. The snippets of her life that you get through her video diary actually touch you. You can identify with her story. Of the remaining three stories, Pratiek's story makes some sense. As for Shai and Amir's stories, they were not stories! All that Amir does in the movie is change apartments, watch a video and paint a picture. What we learn about him is that he was once married and has a child and that his ex is in Australia. So ok, we know that Amir is a divorced painter. That was established in the first 5 minutes. But where is the story. As for Shai, she is is a banker on a Sabbatical to do a report on the underbelly of Mumbai. And she enjoys spending time with a Dhobi and might even have feelings for this illiterate charmer. And has a tendency to get drunk and have one night stands. And she might be interested in Amir's character romantically and that relationship might have a future. Again facts which are quickly established. But where is the story!!!! For me, the one thing most important for a movie is that it must have a story. The story may be incomplete, but it must be there. Dhobi ghat does not have a story. It takes 95 minutes to establish some basic facts about 4 characters. And that is it. Taran Adarsh likes the way Mumbai was portrayed in the movie. Since I don't live in Mumbai, I could not identify with this portrayal. I have visited Mumbai and and been frustrated by its traffic. I have heard about its rain. The slums and the old buildings are present in every city of Mumbai. I understand symbolisms. But Dhobi Ghat is too heavy on symbolism and too low on story. Give me a story please. Kiran, next time make a movie that has a story. And please do not compare her with Mira Nair and Deepa Mehta. Monsoon Wedding, Kamasutra, Earth, Fire, Water, they all had stories. Dhobi Ghat does not have a story. PLEASE GIVE ME A STORY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

REVIEW - -DHOBI GHAT - -- a movie that doesnt look like one... a movie, aamir khan and kiran rao will be proud of one day, a movie that captures the interiors of Mumbai city,in a different way. Movie lovers(those who dont watch movies for just entertainment) surely gonna love this film, though i wont be wrong if i call this film, a DOCUMENTRY DRAMA.. Amazingly Shot, No unnecessary song and dance routine, humorous in its own way.. Audiences were actually so much involved in the movie that nobody made any noices during it.Four different characters, lives in different parts of the city, interrelated to each other... and Who ever thought that Aamir Khan(ARUN) have a small role in the film, well, you are wrong, All the four actors,, except the second girl, YASMIN, have equal character lenths.. Prateik Babbar(MUNNA) is a scene stealer.. He is surely an actor to watch out for in the future.. Monika Dogra(SHAI) is very believable too(means natural) in front of the camera.. Aamir Khan in a never seen before avatar, check out his style of smoking, though he is not a painter in real life like Salman Khan is, but you will actually start thinking, whether 'he can paint too'??and Not to be left behind, Kriti Malhotra(YASMEEN NOOR), someone who is actually is not in the movie, but her character is the one who captures the under belly of mumbai...(you willl know what i am talking about when you see the film)..and Yaa, dont forget to go to the loo before the movie begins beacuase it doesnt have any interval. :)Final Words, Dont go expecting it to be a blockbuster kind of a film(though it has already earned +50 Crores).. it is more of a docu drama about the high and lows of life and the life in mumbai in four different perspective, which u might have seen on HISTORY or DISCOVERY channel before.. Go expecting a fresh take on film making which inspires young directors, and make producers take notice in the talent of KIRAN RAO, the director.( though she doesnt need any other producerm when she already has Aamir Khan)

As a fanatic fan of Bollywood since the 1980’s, I confidently say that it has grown; economically, commercially and conceptually. We get to see commercial projects which are better than ever before; we even come across movies based on experimental topics. But what I have been missing is a genre that has witnessed a huge gap; the genre which included masterpieces such as “Ijazatâ€, “Arth†and plenty of other ART movies. Just when one starts suspecting the death of this genre, in comes a breath of fresh air in the form of “Dhobi Ghatâ€. Most would term this latest movie by Amir Khan’s Production House as an experiment, but for me, this is in fact a case of Bollywood “RE-DISCOVERING†one of its lost and most precious treasures. I want to write pages of praise for Amir Khan and his pursuit towards excellence in film making, but going into that will actually be a little unfair to the film itself. The makers of the film have extended a brilliant approach to the narrative. At the surface, it does seem like an unorthodox tale, but beneath the crudeness of this surface, lays a silky ocean of tender and common emotions. Let’s scratch this surface and search the treasure… • The screenplay presents some amazing analogies. The sea is beautifully presented to express the commotion beneath its apparent calmness. The hustle bustle of the city beautifully depicts the fast pace of today’s era; but glimpses of common life reflect the simplicity glowing within the hearts of the characters. • The direction is superb and there is a stamp of originality all over the 1 and a half hour of the film. From dialogues to expressions; from background music to camera angles and from performances to editing, each and everything is pure. Kiran Rao has held herself up and has proudly risen above the shadow of her husband’s reputation. • The characters are adorably crafted and realistically presented. o Shai, being an NRI, has no issues with Arun trashing her after a one night’s stand. o Arun, being a loner, stabs his cigarettes in his coffee mug and sleeps on the couch while watching TV. o Yasmeen, being a simple village girl, complies with her family’s wishes and surrenders to her husband’s betrayal without a protest. o And finally Munna, being a poor guy infatuated with showbiz, realizes the social differences between him and Shai. This realism of characters has literally blown me away. • Technically, the film is a masterpiece. I have no doubt that the cinematographer of this movie will be grabbing a lot of awards next year. Background music is extra special and editing is really crisp. • The director and editors rightfully assess that extending the movie to more than 90 or 95 minutes would ruin the impact. They deserve applause for refraining from any commercial temptation and sticking to the plan. The film is loaded with some nice performances. • I am a huge Amir Khan fan, yet I have to place Prateik Babbar above the ace actor in terms of his performance. Prateik is absolutely mesmerizing with his restrained portrayal of Munna. His expressions during the photo-shoot and his last scene at the window of Shai’s car are more than enough to prove that this boy is bound to live up to his mother’s reputation. • Amir, on the other hand, defies all the basics of stardom. He did it in “Rang Dey Basanti†and “Taarey Zameen Pay†and now he does it again. He hides himself behind junior actors and still manages to shine. His lips don’t move much, but his eyes keep on speaking and his mannerism keeps on radiating a comfort for the viewer. • The two debutant girls have acted brilliantly. Both Monica Dogra (Shai) and Kriti Malhotra (Yasmeen) sink into their respective characters and contribute significantly in making the film believable. In terms of content, I cannot find any negative in the movie, but it will be a huge bonus for me if the film works at the theatrical level. I doubt if most of today’s audience would want to sit again through the slow pace of the movie, thus chances of repeat audience are almost zero. I normally feel bad if the movies I like don’t work at the box office, but in case of Dhobi Ghat, the pleasure of watching this film was immense enough to let any bad feeling creep in. It was an honor to be in the same hall with Shai, Arun, Yasmeen and above all Munna; four characters that I would love to meet again.
