Director Mr. Sanjay Leela Bhansali means every frame must have been like painting and it is true here also but he got carried away in visually grandeur rather that enhancing emotional quotient. Screenplay by Prakash Kapadia and Director himself, is either flat, repetitive or over board, like the scene where Baji Rao puts hid hot dagger on Mastani wound, what was the purpose of conceiving it, was it for care, cure or just an excuse for first hug!? After being touched with hot dagger I am unable to understand how can one think of love and even with that person!? In intro scene she also gives a cut mark which was one note above. Dialogues by Prakash Kapadiya are gems, very meaningful and worthy. Like when Mastani justifies the value of color, or confront conversation between Kashi Bai and Mastani are fantastic. I couldn't get the walking in pond metaphor, like Baji Rao walking in home pond when he meets Nizam of Dakkhin, then meeting with Mastani and then Kashi Bai pulling him into a pond to walk? In anger, love and care always he prefers to walk in water!!! In any emotional scenes it rains heavily, it is an easy way for any creative person to think rain scenes, when they are unable to make audience to shed tears by inducing correct emotions they try to hide behind rain drops. I was just untouched with the main love track of Baji Rao and Mastani. It was very shallowly established. A scene, where Kashi Bai tries to blow off Deeya in front of Baji Rao is very good, fresh and has loads of emotions but then goes over board in another metaphor by showing ageless small cut mark on neck of Baji Rao by Mastani, because it was done by his love interest? Very often film faintly reminds of Mughl-E-Azan and prominently Devdas, even in back ground, dance of both rival heroines or in dialogues, climax just hammer you to must remind. First half is very slow, pre climax is intense and emotional but again drags badly in over stretched climax. Rather than showing good scenes to establish character or conflict they just start showing songs, which worsens the already slow pace. Performance wise Ranveer Singh as Baji Rao, is OK. Somehow I am not totally convinced by his performance of portraying such a historical heavy character but he needs special appreciation for his fine nuances of Marathi accent in dialogues. Deepika Padukone as Mastani, is par excellence. She is just astonishing in every frame with full of emotions on face and in voice. Priyanka Chopda as Kashi Bai, is very impressive. Milind Soman is good. Music by Director himself is OK. Two tracks "Main Deewani Mastani" and "Aayat" are melodious
